Tarik Skubal reveals gesture Clayton Kershaw made after trade

The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired reigning American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal in a trade with the Detroit Tigers before the deadline.

Skubal is just another All-Star added to LA’s roster as the Dodgers aim for a World Series three-peat. As it turns out, Skubal said he received a touching gesture from Dodgers legend Clayton Kershaw.

“When I got traded here, (Clayton) texted me and gave me the lay of the land. I appreciated that,” Skubal said.

The two were teammates in March with Team USA for the World Baseball Classic, although Skubal’s time was short.

Kershaw retired from MLB after the 2025 season, although he still suited up for Team USA at the WBC. Still, Kershaw spent his entire career with the Dodgers, so it’s a neat gesture for the southpaw to reach out and welcome Skubal to Los Angeles.

On Tuesday, Skubal made his Dodgers debut at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs, although he took the loss after going six innings and allowing two runs in the Cubs’ 5-1 victory.

The Milwaukee Brewers also reportedly made an offer for Skubal, but LA had more firepower in the deal. Skubal’s contract expires after the season, but there are plenty of expectations that LA will sign the left-hander long-term as he joins a star-studded roster.
