The Los Angeles Dodgers had originally opened the season by making history, winning their first eight games, but have since lost four of their last five games, including three straight.
Following their 8-0 winning streak, this recent losing streak for Los Angeles has coincided with their East Coast trip. Up until Tuesday’s beatdown, the Dodgers seemed to be hurting themselves with mistakes in each loss. Bad base running, poor fielding, and uncharacteristic at-bats have led to this losing streak. But the fact remains that heading East has forced the Dodgers to play in what they categorize as difficult weather conditions.
In fact, outfielder Teoscar Hernández who said playing in cold weather makes a big difference in terms of playing baseball.
“As a player it’s a little hard,” Hernández said of the cold weather after Tuesday’s 8-2 loss to the Washington Nationals. “I was six years on this side [of the country], where it’s cold early in the season. Then when I get to L.A. last year it was my first year playing those early games with no cold weather. It’s a big difference. Especially when you’re not used to it, it can make a big difference.”
However, he did add that the weather is no excuse.
“We’re not used to playing in the cold. But it cannot be an excuse for us to perform different,” Hernández said. “But they’re hitting the ball pretty good, getting on base, scoring runs. We’re just not putting together good at-bats. We’re not getting on base and everything is not going the way we want. That’s the game. We just need to bounce back tomorrow.”
Plus, athletes of all sports should be prepared to play in cold weather to minimize injury risks and optimize performance.
Hopefully, after being off Thursday and then traveling back to the warm-weather of Los Angeles for a six-game homestand, things will turn around for the Dodgers in a much-needed way and get them back to writing history.
