It has been a nightmare 2025 season for Texas A&M baseball. The Aggies began the season ranked No. 1 in the nation, but they have massively underperformed expectations. Texas A&M entered Saturday 14-15 overall and 1-9 in SEC play with plenty of work to do to reach the NCAA Tournament.
On Saturday, the Aggies showed signs of the team many expected to make the College World Series. Texas A&M swept a doubleheader against No. 1 Tennessee, including a 17-6 run rule victory in game two. Aggies third baseman Wyatt Henseler led the way in game two, going for 3-5 with two home runs and five RBIs.
The series win is Texas A&M’s first against an SEC opponent this season. The Aggies were swept in their first two SEC series against Alabama and Vanderbilt and lost two out of three to Kentucky last weekend.
While the Aggies still face an uphill battle in 2025, a series win against the No. 1 team in the country is sure to give them momentum. Entering Saturday’s doubleheader, Tennessee had just two losses, but Texas A&M doubled that total in one day.
Saturday’s performance showcased why Texas A&M was the preseason No. 1 team. The Aggies put together two complete performances, especially offensively. Behind projected top MLB draft pick Jace LaViolette, Texas A&M expected to have an elite offense. The Aggies have struggled for most of the season but exploded for 26 runs in the two games Saturday.
The Aggies also got strong performances from their pitchers, as starters Justin Lamkin and Myles Patton both pitched six innings and earned wins in their starts. Throughout this difficult season, Texas A&M has rarely been able to put together strong offensive and pitching performances at the same time, but it happened twice Saturday.
Texas A&M is now back above .500 with a chance to string some wins together to get back in postseason contention. The Aggies will host South Carolina for a three-game series next weekend in between midweek contests against Sam Houston and Tarleton State. This five-game stretch provides Texas A&M with a chance to stack wins before travelling to face No. 2 Arkansas in another massive test.
