Texas Rangers Nearing Deal with Depth Outfielder

The World Champion Texas Rangers are reportedly nearing an agreement with reserve outfielder Travis Jankowski, who was part of the championship roster a season ago.

The Rangers and free agent outfielder Travis Jankowski are in talks on a deal that would bring the veteran back for a second season in Texas, reports Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. Nothing’s final just yet, though Grant suggests the two sides are nearing an agreement.

The 32-year-old Pennsylvania native is a nine-year veteran who has played for the San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners and Rangers. He appeared in 107 games for Texas last season, which was his most since 2021. Lifetime, he's a .241 hitter with a .327 on-base percentage.

He's known more for his speed and defense and is a great late-game replacement option for manager Bruce Bochy. He hit .263 last season with one home run, 30 RBI and 19 stolen bases. He appeared in seven postseason games for the Rangers in their run to the World Series.

Texas appears primed for another strong season in 2024, although they do have questions in the starting rotation. Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer are both out until at least midseason with injury, and Jordan Montgomery is currently a free agent (though the two sides could reunite).

Texas also lost Aroldis Chapman from the bullpen but did just sign veteran David Robertson.
