The '500-Home Run club members' quiz

Happy 56th birthday to five-time MLB All-Star, 1996 Silver Slugger, 2002 Roberto Clemente Award winner and 2006 American League Comeback Player of the Year, Jim Thome!

Thome was a 13th-round pick by Cleveland in the 1989 MLB Draft and made his Big League debut in September, 1991. He hit his first career home run in his 27 games that year, but didn’t get regular run at the highest level until 1995 when he played in more than 100 games for the first time. He hit 20 blasts for the first time that season, the first of 11-straight and 16 total in his career.

Thome was a great example of a “three true-outcome hitter,” leading the A.L. in walks three times, all of baseball in strikeouts three times while also hitting 47+ homers in each season from 2001-03. 

Thome played in 22 MLB seasons for six different teams, spending 13 of those years with Cleveland, setting a franchise record with 52 home runs in 2002 and still sitting atop the organization’s all-time leaderboard with 337. 

Thome retired after the 2012 season with 612 home runs and 1,699 RBIs to his name to go with 2,328 total hits to earn a spot in Cooperstown as part of the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2018.
