If the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays were hoping the All-Star break would put a stop to the Boston Red Sox scorching-hot run, they’re so far disappointed. Facing another streaking American League East team in the Baltimore Orioles, the Red Sox won their 14th game in a row on Monday night.
Thanks in part to an eighth-inning go-ahead home run from Caleb Durbin, another two RBIs from Willson Contreras and a 22nd save from Aroldis Chapman, the Red Sox moved within one game of tying the longest winning streak in the franchise’s 126-year history.
“Man, the electricity on that was probably the top of the list,” Durbin said when asked where his go-ahead blast ranks among his all-time career moments.
“Just being able to come through for the guys and get the lead there was big.”
Starting the nominal second-half of the season off with a four-game sweep over the division-leading Rays, Boston is still six games out of the top spot in the A.L. East, but have moved into the final Wild Card spot after sitting at 29-43 just over one month ago.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. While the youngster Durbin gets the headlines for his dinger, veteran catcher Contreras also has five hits, five RBI and two homers in his last four games to move within two homers of his career-high (24) for a single campaign. With that being said, can you name the active MLB players with the most 20-home run seasons?
Good luck!
