Happy 43rd birthday to six-time MLB All-Star, six-time Gold Glover, two-time Silver Slugger and 2009 American League Cy Young winner, Zack Greinke!
Making his Big League debut in 2004, he made 24 starts as a rookie for the Kansas City Royals. From 2004-08, Greinke never posted an ERA below 3.47, led the American League in losses in 2005 and was nearly driven to retirement by his anxiety.
But after working with a sports psychologist, he was able to figure things out both off and on the mound and established himself as the best pitcher in the AL in 2009. He racked up MLB-high 10.4 Wins Above Replacement, striking out 242 batters and winning the first of his two-career ERA titles en route to the AL Cy Young.
After requesting a trade from a rebuilding Kansas City squad after the 2010 season, Greinke spent two seasons between the Brewers and Angels before signing a six-year contract with the Dodgers ahead of the 2013 season. He’d play just three seasons with the Dodgers but was still a productive pitcher, making two All-Star teams and winning his second ERA before being granted free agency and signing another six-year deal with Arizona in 2015.
Greinke spent time with the Houston Astros before returning to the Royals to finish his career, retiring after the 2023 campaign. He hung up his cleats with 20 seasons under his belt, finishing with 2,979 strikeouts, 225 wins and a 3.49 ERA. Coming from an era where pitchers still hit in the National League, he also has nine home runs and 34 RBI with a respectable batting average of .225
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Greinke had the honor of starting the All-Star Game in 2015, his final season with the Dodgers. With that being said, can you name every All-Star Game starting pitcher since 2000?
Good luck!
