On June 29, the boxing world will be treated to a highly anticipated fight as Jesse Bam Rodriguez (19-0, 12 KOs) takes on Juan Francisco Estrada (44-3, 28 KOs) at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, live on DAZN, for Estrada’s WBC and Ring Magazine super flyweight titles. Ahead of this intriguing contest, Big Fight Weekend are looking at the last three opponents of Bam.
On December 16, 2023, Bam went up against Sunny Edwards at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale for the IBF and WBO world titles. The opening round was cagey, but Rodriguez began to establish his jab, already marking up Edwards around the eye. Sunny tried to let his hands go, putting together nice combinations, but Bam kept walking forward and began to dominate the fight.
Edwards showed bravery, but the counter punching of Bam and laser-like jab were the difference. Round nine saw Bam up the pace, catching Sunny with a beautifully timed left cross, knocking him down. Following the conclusion of the round, the corner of Edwards decided to pull their man out, ensuring the Texan fighter was crowned the king of the flyweight division. It was a hugely impressive performance against a world-class opponent.
On April 8, Bam took on Christian Gonzalez at the Boeing Center at Tech Port, San Antonio. The first five rounds saw Rodriguez in control, as he outworked and out-landed his opponent.
Gonzalez finally had success in round right, as he put his shots together well and had a higher output than his opponent. The ninth round saw Bam back on top, bossing proceedings until the bell. Round ten saw Rodriguez walking down his opponent, as the Mexican went into survival mode. Round eleven saw Gonzalez trouble his Texan opponent before Bam recovered and took the final round. The scorecards read 118-110, 116-112 and 117-111, all in favour of the Texan fighter.
Rodriguez faced a tough test on September 17, 2022, as he faced the resilient Israel Gonzalez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In the early rounds, Bam got in close, closing the distance well and working away on the inside to good effect, negating the height and reach advantage of his opponent.
Gonzalez mixed his attacks impressively between the body and head. Both fighters went back and forth during the first few rounds, each having their success. Bam had a point deducted in round eight for a low blow. As the fight progressed, his shot selection impressed greatly, as he slowed down a brave Gonzalez, with his crisp combination punching. The scorecards read 118-109, 117-110 and 114-113. The fight was a lot closer than the scorecards suggested, but Bam’s impressive work down the final stretch was enough for him to get the unanimous decision victory.
