The latest on with Jordan Montgomery’s status with the 2025 Arizona Diamondbacks

With the rotation and bullpen pretty much set, will Jordan Montgomery fit in anywhere with this Arizona Diamondbacks team?

That could be one of the biggest questions for this club the entire season, especially if they are contending and he is struggling. Montgomery, who exercised his $22.5 million dollar option, has been rumored in trade scenarios for a while now. Seems like the Arizona Diamondbacks have been making some phone calls too. General manager Mike Hazen spoke about how he has been fielding calls about building up his team’s pitching depth.

We all felt the frustrations of the 2024 season when it came to Montgomery on the mound. Ending the season with a 6.23 ERA in 117 innings, Montgomery dug himself a hole that he couldn’t seem to get out of. It became such a tense situation that Arizona Diamondbacks Owner Ken Kendrick made a statement taking full responsibility for the signing of Montgomery, putting the blame on himself.

Would anybody take on Montgomery’s contract? Sure there are tons of teams around the league who definitely need new pitching, especially when they encounter injuries. Though it would be far from reality to see a club spend $13 million on an absent minded pitcher at times, who couldn’t seem to get anybody out when it mattered last season. The best case scenario might just be hoping he returns to form sometimes, and is used as a middle reliever when somebody has an off day.

Finding out a solution to this problem would help both parties in the now, and in the long term. It isn’t a make or break situation, but it sure could be helpful or detrimental.
