Happy 63rd birthday to three-time MLB All-Star, two-time World Series champion and 1998 American League Championship Series MVP, David Wells!
Wells pitched 21 Major League seasons for nine different teams, with the longest stretch of his career coming with the Toronto Blue Jays where he began his MLB career. He Wells spent his first six seasons with Toronto before bouncing from Detroit, Cincinnati and Baltimore before landing with the late-90’s New York Yankees.
There he won his two World Series titles and threw his perfect game on May 17th, 1998, just three days after his 35th birthday. That year he was also named ALCS MVP for the Yankees in their 4-2 win over Cleveland, combining for 15 2/3 innings with 18 strikeouts and two walks with five earned runs.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Wells retired after the 2007 season, racking up 239 wins, 2,201 strikeouts with a 4.13 ERA and one of baseball’s 24 perfect games. With that being said, how many of the pitchers to throw a perfect game can you name in five minutes.
Good luck!
