When the Philadelphia Phillies signed Nick Castellanos to a five-year, $100 million contract back in March of 2022, very few expected the relationship to turn as poorly as it did. Now with the thirty-three year old heading to the San Diego Padres, a new chapter begins for both Castellanos and the Phillies. From being one of the largest free-agent signings in franchise history to being openly shopped for three consecutive years, Castellanos will forever be remembered as one of Philadelphia’s most polarizing stars.

A Welcome Embrace From the City of Brotherly Love

In 2022, Castellanos received a warm welcome from the Philadelphia faithful. Seen as a top-of-the-order bat and someone who could slot in at corner outfield as well as designated hitter, he provided the club with some right-handed power that the lineup was lacking. With the Cincinnati Reds, Castellanos posted a .309 batting average and a .939 OPS, leading many to believe the signing was a slam-dunk deal. The inaugural season of the contract was one better left forgotten.

Posting an OPS six points below the league average and patrolling a sketchy, at best, right field, Castellanos was met with criticism from the fans. Despite the team making it to the World Series, the slugger slashed just .185/.232/.246, with his best series being in the Division Series against the rival Atlanta Braves. Having a disappointing season culminated with making the final out of the season with a pop-out in foul territory on a pitch well out of the zone, something that would become a trend in his time with the Phillies.

Clutch Casty Sparks Phillies in Key Moments

Both 2023 and 2024 saw the Philadelphia Phillies call on Nick Castellanos to deliver in clutch situations time and time again. Singlehandedly leading the team to a postseason series win over the Atlanta Braves once again in 2023, Castellanos became the first player in MLB history to have multiple home runs in consecutive postseason games. Fans believed this was the year the team would finally get over the hump; however, the bats of the Philadelphia lineup shut down when needed most. Castellanos collected just one hit in twenty-seven plate appearances against the Arizona Diamondbacks, leading to the first trade talks during that year’s offseason.

The Phillies had one of their best seasons of recent memory in 2024. Castellanos made more history by setting the record with four regular-season walk-off hits. The city knew they could rely on their right-fielder when they needed a clutch hit, and that became apparent in the NLDS against the New York Mets in Game 2. Castellanos homered to tie the game early and walked off the game by doubling down the left-field line, scoring Shortstop Trea Turner. Despite his clutch factor and suiting up every game of the 2024 season, Castellanos’s name would continue to float around the offseason as the Phillies looked for trade suitors.

Another Disappointing Season in 2025

This past season saw the Phillies make a strong regular-season campaign. They earned a first-round bye in the playoffs, but ultimately got knocked out in the Divisional Round by the eventual World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Castellanos doubled twice for his only hits in fifteen plate appearances over the four-game series. Many fans were over the entire signing and believed that the final game of the season was the last time they would see Castellanos patrol right field for Philadelphia. They were right.

Back in June of 2025, Castellanos was benched for defensive purposes late in a ballgame against the Miami Marlins. It was staggering to see at the time, due to manager Rob Thompson always putting Castellanos in right field, but something seemed different this time around. It was later revealed just one week ago that Castellanos brought beer into the dugout after being substituted late in the game. He also confronted Thompson for giving “too much slack in some areas and too tight of restrictions in others [that] are not conducive to us winning.”

Replaced, Released, and Redirected

At the start of the winter offseason, the Philadelphia Phillies signed Adolis Garcia to play right field. This was the proverbial final nail in the coffin of Castellanos’s time in Philadelphia. It was always speculated prior to the Garcia signing that Castellanos would be either traded or released during the offseason. The latter would come on February 12th, with the organization officially stating the release of the player they are paying $20 million for the 2026 season.

Shortly after his release, Castellanos signed with the San Diego Padres on a league minimum contract, where he will play first base as well as designated hitter and corner outfield at times. As for the Phillies, the club has gotten better marginally. Adolis Garcia adds some quality power in the middle of the lineup, and it is undeniable what he can accomplish defensively in right field, winning a Gold Glove in 2023. The Phillies will also look to prospects like Justin Crawford and Andrew Painter to inject some youth into an aging Philadelphia core of players.

End of My Nick Castellanos Rant

Nick Castellanos will go down in Philadelphia sports history as one of its most polarizing players. Some see him as a clutch hitter who is seemingly misunderstood and gets the brunt of the hate for the recent struggles in the Phillies’ postseason efforts. Most see him as quite the opposite, a disappointment. The man who was dubbed a doubles machine and meant to protect hitters like Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber was significantly underwhelming in his stint with Philadelphia.

Offensively, he was hit or miss, in every sense of the term. He struggled with low and away breaking balls, leading to swings and misses that pitchers exploited. On the base paths, he was often pinch-run for due to his lack of speed, which was seen against the Dodgers on a sacrifice bunt attempt that led to a disaster. Defensively, he was a liability in right field, accumulating -20 defensive runs saved in his tenure with the Phillies. He was constantly among the worst defensive right fielders in the majors, limiting his value. He always spoke candidly, a mark which earned him praise by the Philadelphia crowd, but consequently led to his benching and eventual departure.
