The Red Sox Look Incredibly Lame Right Now

There are plenty of reasons to dislike the Yankees.

Beating you too badly probably shouldn’t be one of them.

The Boston Red Sox somehow managed to make a 16-1 loss to their biggest rival even more embarrassing after radio play-by-play announcer Will Flemming completely lost it over Jazz Chisholm Jr. stealing bases late in Sunday’s blowout.

With New York leading 7-1 in the eighth inning, Chisholm stole second and third while Boston wasn’t even holding him on. Flemming responded by calling Chisholm a “bush league player” and suggesting Red Sox pitcher Jovani Moran should retaliate by hitting Austin Wells.

Seriously?

If you don’t want the Yankees stealing bases while they’re beating you by six runs, maybe stop them.

And things only got more embarrassing from there.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that it wasn’t even Chisholm deciding on his own to run. Boone made the call after Boston chose not to hold Chisholm on base.

So Boston essentially told the Yankees, we’re not going to defend this, and then got mad when New York took advantage of it.

That’s not “bush league.”

That’s baseball.

Carlos Rodón probably had the best response of anybody: “Pitch better.”

Exactly.

This isn’t Little League where everyone decides to stop trying once somebody gets too far ahead. The Yankees and Red Sox are fighting for playoff positioning, and New York had every reason to continue playing.

Not to mention, Boston wasn’t exactly showing mercy when it had opportunities to pile on opponents.

But the worst part wasn’t even complaining about Chisholm.

It was suggesting that Boston should intentionally throw at Austin Wells, a player who had absolutely nothing to do with Chisholm stealing the bases.

Aaron Judge called Flemming out for that, saying broadcasters shouldn’t be encouraging players to hurt each other. Flemming later apologized publicly and directly to Boone, admitting his comments crossed a line.

And Chisholm’s response might have been even better.

After being asked about Flemming, Chisholm basically said he didn’t know who he was before Monday and wasn’t going to remember him afterward either.

Perfect.

The Yankees won three of four games in the series and finished it by absolutely destroying Boston 16-1, scoring nine runs in the eighth inning alone.

Instead of being angry that the Yankees kept playing hard, maybe Boston should be angry about giving up 16 runs to its biggest rival.

Because complaining about stolen bases while you’re getting destroyed and then suggesting somebody should get drilled for it?

That’s a lot more “bush league” than anything Jazz Chisholm did.
