The return of K-Rod: Francisco Rodriguez planning MLB comeback?

We may not have witnessed the final K-Rod strikeout just yet.

On Monday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com wrote that 38-year-old pitcher Francisco Rodriguez is eyeing an MLB comeback. Rodriguez spoke about his intentions during an Instagram Live session with Venezuelan journalist Guillermo Arcay last week.

Per Woodbery:

“That is the goal,” (Rodriguez) said. "In spite of the fact that I’m seen as being advanced in age, that is the goal. The injuries and the ups and downs have slowed me down. But I have the conviction, the hunger and I am completely sure I can accomplish it."

Rodriguez pitched in the big leagues in 16 seasons, but his last MLB appearance was with the Detroit Tigers in 2017. The club parted ways with him after he posted a career-worst 7.82 ERA in 28 appearances and blew several save opportunities.

After Rodriguez failed to land a gig on any other MLB squad, he spent time playing for the Long Island Ducks and in Mexico. The man who is affectionately known as "K-Rod" is fourth all-time in career saves and first among active players since he hasn't retired.

MLB and the MLB Players Association haven't agreed on a proposal for a season that's been indefinitely suspended since March and that will be altered due to the coronavirus pandemic. With clubs likely needing so-called "taxi squads" filled with names capable of replacing any players who test positive for the coronavirus during a shortened campaign, Rodriguez receiving a nod from an organization that has nothing to lose and is willing to take a flier on a veteran who can't hurt its playoff hopes isn't all that far-fetched.

Maybe we'll at least see K-Rod in Spring Training 2.0, whenever that begins.
