Happy 91st birthday to Major League Baseball legend and humanitarian Roberto Clemente!
Clemente is one of the most revered figures in the history of baseball, and while his 15 All-Star games, 12 Gold Gloves, four batting titles regular season MVP, World Series MVP and two championships are incredibly impressive, Clemente’s work off of the diamond is his legacy.
Clemente spent much of his time in the offseason doing charity work, eventually literally giving his life to it. Not only was he involved in developing a development center for disadvantaged youth athletes in his home of Puerto Rico, he also arranged for emergency relief supplies to go to Nicaragua after a 1972 earthquake. After learning the first shipments of supplies sent were being diverted by government officials away from the people they were intended to help, Clemente decided to accompany a shipment on his own to try and ensure it went to those who needed it. He never made it, with his plane crashing over the Atlantic Ocean on New Year’s Eve, 1972.
Now, Major League Baseball remembers Clemente with the annual Roberto Clemente Award, which goes to the player “who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.” How many of the players to win the Roberto Clemente Award since 2000 can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
