Happy 53rd birthday to 10-time MLB All-Star, 10-time Gold Glover, two-time batting champion and 2001 American League Rookie of the Year AND MVP, Ichiro Suzuki!
After putting together an incredibly decorated career in Japan, Ichiro signed with the Seattle Mariners in 2001 at 27 years old. He immediately led all of baseball with 242 hits, 56 stolen bases and won the batting title as a “rookie.” He’d lead MLB in hits seven times in his first 10 seasons, eclipsing the 200-hit milestone each year from 2001-2010 – his age-37 season.
Ichiro played a season-and-change more for Seattle before getting dealt to the New York Yankees at the 2012 trade deadline. He’d spend the next six seasons between the Yankees and Miami Marlins before finishing his MLB career where it began, retiring after the 2019 season.
Ichiro hung up his cleats with 3,089 MLB hits, 780 RBI and 509 stolen bases, and his 262 hits in 2004 remain a single-season record.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. How many of the players with the most hits in a single-season for each MLB franchise in the Live-Ball Era (since 1920) can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
