I’m not sure I’ve ever felt more relieved to see Trent Thornton come into a game than I was on Thursday.

The Blue Jays looked to be running away with their series finale against the White Sox as Alek Manoah rolled into the eighth inning with a 4-0 lead. Unfortunately, things sort of came unraveled when Matt Chapman wasn’t able to make an out on a ground ball that should have been the third out of the inning.

Luis Robert capitalized with a two-run double, which chased Manoah from the game. Adam Cimber then came in and allowed a single to make the score 4-3 before getting out of the inning with a fly ball.

Chicago’s comeback attempt was killed quickly as the Blue Jays rallied for four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Teoscar Hernandez doubled, Alejandro Kirk walked, Cavan Biggio doubled, Matt Chapman was hit by a pitch, and Santiago Espinal and Bo Bichette hit back-to-back singles to make the score 8-3.

So, rather than burning Romano in a one-run game, the Blue Jays got to send out Thornton to mop things up.
