After some of the most entertaining games in the history of the World Baseball Classic tournament, pool play has ended, bringing on the single-elimination rounds, starting with the quarterfinals. With a flurry of unexpected games, memorable moments, and star-studded plays, the WBC has cemented itself as one of sports’ greatest tournaments. Across the four different pools, superstars of baseball were constantly performing under the brightest of lights.
The Canadian roster is not one that will catch the eyes of the average baseball fan. Featuring several Major League talent with names like Josh Naylor, Otto Lopez, Denzel Clarke, and former professional southpaw James Paxton, it is fair to say Canada has no superstar. However, Canada managed to win three out of the four games, scoring a combined twenty-one runs across the contests. Canada will be the home team for their contest in the quarterfinals against the United States.
Puerto Rico had one of the WBC’s best games this tournament with a thrilling extra-inning clash against Panama. After losing to Canada in the final game to determine the winner of Pool A, Puerto Rico will hope to improve on its previous WBC stint in which they were eliminated by Mexico in the quarterfinals back in 2023. Unfortunately, the enemy that awaits is Pool B’s surprising winner, Italy, against whom Puerto Rico is undefeated in two contests.
Perhaps the biggest story in this year’s WBC is the surprising rise of Italy, a team that went undefeated in pool play. After stunning the United States in an 8-6 victory, Italy, backed by a three-home run game by captain Vinnie Pasquantino, eliminated Mexico. Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola was lights out in his five scoreless innings of work, allowing just four hits, while the offense exploded for nine runs.
Italy’s biggest win over the United States put the team on the minds of every baseball fan as a legitimate contender to win the WBC finals. Michael Lorenzen dismantled the star-studded lineup of the United States as the offense, once again, flashed its power with three home runs. Italy will play host to the aforementioned Puerto Rico on Saturday.
No one could have believed the United States would be on the brink of elimination before making it out of pool play when the WBC started. Shockingly, that is exactly what happened after falling to Italy. The United States has no holes in the lineup with superstar after superstar filling every position across the diamond. Despite this, the United States nearly came short of making it to the quarterfinals due to a lack of sustained offense against Italy.
Poor defense and a lack of timely hitting fueled the only loss for the United States, the latter of which has been a trend across pool play. With runners in scoring position across the four games, the United States is 13-47, while leaving a combined forty-two runners on base. Home runs have come when needed to win games, but clutch hitting is what will inevitably be the difference maker as the games progress.
Shohei Ohtani, Munetaka Murekami, and Masataka Yoshida all excelled in pool play for Japan. Ohtani is batting .556 with an OPS of 2.025, falling a triple shy of the cycle in his first game of pool play through the opening two innings. Yoshinobu Yamamoto cruised through his start against Chinese Taipei. Japan has kicked off its strong campaign to repeat as WBC champions with a convincing, undefeated beginning.
Korea advanced to the quarterfinals after splitting the four games of pool play, but holding the tiebreaker over Australia and Chinese Taipei. One of the tournament’s best hitters, Bo Gyeong Moon, has been crushing the ball, driving in eleven runners, and batting .538. Korea managed to take Japan to a thriller of a game, but ultimately came up short. Korea will certainly have its work cut out for it as it will face the Dominican Republic in the first game of the quarterfinal round.
The WBC’s best team, the Dominican Republic, has shown why the superstars on the roster are so revered. Undefeated, the Dominican Republic looks to continue its domination in the tournament. With franchise cornerstones like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Ketel Marte, Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto, and Junior Caminero, the lineup swatted thirteen home runs across pool play. It will surprise no one if the Dominican Republic makes a long run through the tournament and claims its second WBC championship.
Venezuela took three out of the four contests, with the sole loss being to the Dominican Republic, after a nail-biting game. With plenty of star power, Venezuela features a deep lineup that is considered one of the best in the tournament. The pitching staff has allowed just twelve runs, with seven of those coming against the Dominican Republic. The quarterfinals will see Venezuela take on Japan on Saturday night with Ranger Suarez on the mound.
The World Baseball Classic has rightfully become the focus of sports fans across the world. Seeing the Dominican Republic players celebrating after every run scored as fans lose their minds in the stands is a true testament to the pride the tournament can show. The United States fans came together to cheer on Italy to secure a chance to survive to the quarterfinals. This tournament is exactly what the sport needs: a chance to see juggernaut lineups play against one another in the name of national pride.
The Dominican Republic is arguably the favorite to win it all, while teams like Italy and Korea can play spoiler and shock the baseball world. The United States has unfinished business after falling just short in 2023 in the finals. Ohtani has cemented himself as a once-in-a-lifetime player as he leads Japan to a back-to-back WBC championship. Regardless of the outcome, the World Baseball Classic will draw fans from across the planet to tune in and watch as baseball’s best square off for the trophy.
