The Yankees are a team known for power. They’ve built a reputation on dominant pitching, too. But in 2025, their most notorious skill might be running themselves into outs.
On Wednesday night, it hit a new low.
Austin Wells made the latest entry in what’s become a season-long blooper reel. In a tie game in the ninth against the Rays, Wells was on first with one out when Trent Grisham dropped down a bunt. The play was fielded cleanly for the second out—but Wells, thinking the inning was over, peeled off the basepath and was promptly caught in a rundown for the final out. Just like that, the Yankees went from having the winning run on base to handing the Rays free extras.

“Thought there were three outs… Obviously can’t happen,” Aaron Boone said postgame.
Wells didn’t sugarcoat it either. “I think I was just being an idiot,” he said, admitting he lost track of the situation.
Unfortunately, Wells isn’t alone in 2025 when it comes to TOOTBLANs—Thrown Out On The Bases Like A Nincompoop.
Back on June 13 at Fenway, Anthony Volpe was the automatic runner in extras. With no outs in the 10th, he tried to steal third and was thrown out on a close play. One batter later, the rally was dead and the Yankees eventually lost.
The very next night, Jasson Dominguez got doubled off second base after losing track of the outs. He began jogging back to the dugout on a routine flyout—only to be tagged in a rundown by the Red Sox.
Then came Ben Rice on June 15. With two on, he attempted a double steal and was picked off at second before even taking off. A brutal moment. A predictable outcome.
The Yankees have officially recorded just 21 outs on the bases this season—tied for fourth fewest in MLB, but that stat excludes pickoffs and caught stealings. Several of their ugliest mistakes like Volpe’s gamble, Dominguez’s brain cramp, Wells’ walk-off jog, don’t even show up in that total.
Boone has said repeatedly that the Yankees need to tighten things up. But nearly every week, someone gives away a critical out.
In 2025, the Yankees aren’t just striking out or slumping. They’re also embarrassing themselves by literally running into outs.
