There Is A New Variable In The Yankees Bullpen Equation

Devin Williams is starting to look like the pitcher the New York Yankees hoped they were getting.

The two-time National League Reliever of the Year has now made six straight appearances without allowing a run. His fastball is finally back under control, and his signature changeup—nicknamed The Airbender for its cartoonish movement-is — is once again baffling hitters. The results have been sharp, but the body language might be louder.

Williams looks comfortable for the first time in pinstripes.

Still, don’t expect Aaron Boone to throw him back into the fire.

When asked Tuesday if Williams would reclaim the closer role that Luke Weaver has held since Williams' early-season stumbles, Boone didn’t commit.

“We’ll see,” Boone told reporters. “No plans right now.”

Why mess with something that’s working?

Williams clearly struggled early on. He was clearly bothered by having to shave his beard in spring training, and it carried over onto the field. He never seemed to settle in mechanically and emotionally. Closing in the Bronx isn’t the same as closing in Milwaukee, and the pressure seemed to hit him hard.

Meanwhile, Weaver continues to deliver. He recorded his sixth save of the season Tuesday, extending a steady run that’s made him Boone’s go-to in tight spots. Weaver doesn’t have Williams’ high-90s heat or awards on his Baseball-Reference page, but he’s earned trust through consistency.

Boone’s tone reflects the philosophy the Yankees took with Williams when he was struggling — don’t force it. With Williams trending up and Weaver holding steady, there’s no rush to redefine roles. If Williams keeps dominating, the decision might make itself. But for now, the Yankees have the rare luxury of letting the moment, not the résumé, dictate the ninth.
