On Sept. 28, 1997, the Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the Colorado Rockies, 13-9 at Coors Field, but Mike Piazza joined the franchise record books with a two-home run day.
Piazza slugged his first home run off John Thomson in the third inning to give him 39 on the season. He came up again in the fifth inning and slugged his second of the day of Thomson, putting him at an even 40 homers for the year.
With that second home run, Piazza set the single-season record for most in a season by a Los Angeles Dodgers player. The Dodgers franchise home run record was held by Duke Snider, who hit 43 round-trippers for the 1956 Brooklyn team.
Both records have since been passed. Garry Sheffield took the top spot from Piazza and tied Snider with 43 home runs during the 2000 season. Shawn Green currently holds the Dodgers franchise record with 49 home runs in 2001, and Adrián Beltré came close to tying that total in 2004, ending the season with 48.
Cody Bellinger also came close to setting the single-season franchise record when he slugged 47 homers during his 2019 National League MVP season.
James Loney ties Dodgers single-game RBI record
Also on this day in Dodgers history but in 2006, James Loney helped lead the team to a 19-11 victory over the Rockies, with the game taking place at Coors Field as well.
Loney went 4-for-5 with two home runs and finished the day with nine RBI. He entered the matchup with one homer and eight RBI in 93 previous at-bats, tied the Dodgers franchise single-game RBI record that was previously set by Gil Hodges in his 1950 four-homer game for Brooklyn.
Loney also broke the L.A. club mark that had been held by Ron Cey, who drove in eight against the San Diego Padres on July 31, 1974.
Since then, multiple other players have come close to Loney’s RBI mark, but the L.A. record still stands. A.J. Pollock, Adrián González and Yasmani Grandal all drove in eight runs in a game at one point between the 2015 to 2021 seasons.

George Springer's status for Game 6 is becoming more clear
George Springer’s status for Game 6 of the World Series is becoming more clear. Springer has missed the last two games of the World Series after hurting his side on a swing in his Toronto Blue Jays’ 18-inning loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3. The Blue Jays were able to win Game 4 on Tuesday and Game 5 on Wednesday despite the outfielder’s absence. On Thursday, Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that Springer is physically ready to play in Game 6. “He’s checked every box physically so far,” Schneider said of Springer. Getting Springer back would be a nice boost to the Blue Jays’ lineup, which has performed well even without him. Springer went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Game 3 before leaving the game. He’s batting .246 with an .884 OPS this postseason and has mashed 6 doubles and 4 home runs in 57 at-bats. Springer went 1-for-3 in Game 2 against Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who is the Dodgers’ scheduled starter for Game 6. Springer’s double was the Blue Jays’ only extra-base hit of the game, and he scored their only run that contest. His presence would be a big help for Toronto.
Logical trade targets if the Vikings decide to buy before the trade deadline
While a loss Sunday in Detroit could turn Minnesota into a seller before Tuesday's NFL trade deadline, a win would get them to 4-4 and perhaps entice them to be a buyer. If they do wind up acquiring help before the trade deadline, who are some logical targets? For that, we need to look at the teams most likely to be selling and find out which players at positions of need — cornerback and perhaps edge rusher — Minnesota could target. We also need to keep in mind that draft capital is a premium. Here's what the Vikings have in the 2026 draft cupboard: 1st round 2nd round 3rd round 5th fround (from Philadelphia via the Sam Howell trade) 6th round (from Indianapolis via the Mekhi Blackmon trade) 7th round 7th round (from Houston via the 2024 Cam Akers trade) 7th round (from Carolina via the Adam Thielen trade) What are the Vikings most likely to do before the deadline? It doesn't sound like much. Alec Lewis, of The Athletic, says to "expect some tires to be kicked, but don’t bank on an addition or subtraction, barring a serious injury." NFL Network's Tom Pelissero doesn't "see them going out and making a massive type of acquisition," but he says he could "see them having interest" in the edge rusher market. SI's Albert Breer says the Vikings are "among a list of teams looking for corners." So, let's see what the likely sellers might have available at cornerback and edge. Cleveland Browns: Myles Garrett (not logical) All signs point to the Browns keeping Garrett, so this is probably a waste of time to even consider. If they did open the door for a trade, it would cost an ungodly amount, including multiple first-round picks and perhaps some talented players. Cleveland hasn't had any cornerbacks mentioned in the rumor mills. Las Vegas Raiders: Eric Stokes Stokes would be a massive upgrade at cornerback for the Vikings, who lack depth behind Byron Murphy Jr. and Isaiah Rodgers. Stokes shouldn't cost a ton because he's on a one-year, $3.5 million contract. There's no guarantee that he re-signs with the Raiders, so Vegas might be smart to trade him now, rather than losing him for nothing in free agency. Stokes ranked No. 38 in PFF coverage grades for cornerbacks, having allowed 10 receptions on 19 targets for 123 yards. Quarterbacks have a 72.9 passer rating when throwing into Stokes' coverage, which puts him among the top 30 in the NFL this season. Maimi Dolphins: Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, Matthew Judon Chubb, Phillips and Judon would could be upgrades over Dallas Turner on the edge. But does Minnesota really want to trade for an edge rusher when Andrew Van Ginkel is about to return to the lineup? It's only a need if Van Ginkel is expected to miss more time. Phillips: 3 sacks, 32 pressures, PFF's 15th-ranked pass rusher at EDGE Chubb: 3 sacks, 21 pressures, PFF's 101st-ranked pass rusher at EDGE Judon: 0 sacks, 5 pressures, PFF's 116th-ranked pass rusher at EDGE Breer is hearing that it could take a third-round pick to get Phillips. New Orleans Saints: Alontae Taylor Taylor would be an upgrade in the cornerback room, but Breer says the Saints are asking for a second or third-round pick for him. The 2022 second-round pick is due to become a free agent, so it would only make sense for Minnesota to give up a quality draft pick for him if they can sign him to an extension. According to PFF, Taylor has the 31st-best coverage grade among cornerbacks, putting him just ahead of Jets star Sauce Gardner. New York Giants: Kayvon Thibodeaux Mike Garafolo reported this week that the Giants are telling interested teams no, but Thibodeaux appears to be the odd man out in New York with Brian Burns and Abdul Carter starting on the edges. He's under contract through 2026, so it might take a Day 2 pick to get him. Should the Vikings offer a third-rounder next year to shore up the edge? Thibodeaux has 2.5 sacks and 25 pressures this season, while ranking 49th among edge rushers via PFF's grades. He had just 5.5 sacks last year, but he posted an 11.5-sack season in 2023, which is what the Giants thought they were getting when they drafted him fifth overall in 2022. Washington Commanders: Noah Igbinoghene Igbinoghene might be the player that makes the most sense for Minnesota because he'd only cost them a late-round draft pick. He's a player who was on the field for 75% of Washington's snaps last season, but roster changes have led to him spending most of this season on the bench, having played a total of 40 defense snaps in 2025. The issue here is that he's best-suited for the slot, and the Vikings need someone who can fill the void of Jeff Okudah (concussions) on the outside. More from Vikings On SI
The 'NFL all-time rushing leaders' quiz
The Baltimore Ravens got off to a slow start to the 2025 NFL season, but their dominant ‘Thursday Night Football,’ performance against the Miami Dolphins is more what Ravens fans were expecting. Lamar Jackson threw for 204 yards and four touchdowns without an interception in his return from injury, while Derrick Henry posted his third 100-rushing-yard effort of the season and second in three games. The performance put Henry at 12,052 rushing yards in his career, making him just the eighth player in NFL history with at least 12,000 yards and 100 rushing touchdowns. Myles Garrett Trade Rumors Swirling With the Eagles in the Crosshairs
With the NFL Trade Deadline rapidly approaching, the Philadelphia Eagles have been actively looking to upgrade their roster. One of the main positions of focus has been improving the pass rush. The Eagles look prepared to take a big swing to address this, in the form of a Myles Garrett trade. Myles Garrett Trade Rumors Swirling With the Eagles in the Crosshairs Eagle Eye Myles Garrett has started to come up in trade rumors over the last few weeks. The Cleveland Browns’ loss against the New England Patriots was a perfect example of why. Garrett had an unbelievable game, recording five sacks. The Browns ultimately lost the game by 19 points. This was the first time in NFL history a player recorded five sacks while losing by more than three points. Garrett has clearly become increasingly frustrated with his team’s struggles despite his own individual performance. Garrett also seems distanced from the team amid his frustration. Amid this uncertainty, rumors have circulated about the Eagles’ willingness to make a trade for the future Hall of Famer. Yahoo Sports reporter Charles Robinson added fuel to the fire with recent comments. Robinson said, “Howie Roseman and the Eagles are super hot after Myles Garrett and would give up like three first-round picks for him.” This would be an unprecedented move from Howie Roseman and the Eagles. On one hand, they would be adding one of the best defensive players in football. Pairing him with Jalen Carter on the defensive line would be a nightmare for opposing offenses. This would be an all-in move for a team recognizing they are in a championship window, trying to maximize it. The Eagles would almost assuredly become the favorites to win the NFC, at the very least. Adding one of, if not the best, pass rushers in the NFL would leave them with almost no weaknesses and a great chance to repeat as champions. Paying a Hefty Price This acquisition would not be cheap for the Eagles. Although Garrett is an all-time great player, giving up three first-round picks would leave the Eagles without a first-round draft pick all the way until 2029. Given all of the massive contracts the Eagles already have (including Garrett in this scenario), it would make it an almost impossible financial situation to navigate. Roseman has shown an ability to navigate tough financial situations, though. He has also shown an ability to maximize his later-round draft picks. In just the last three drafts, the Eagles have drafted all of these players outside of the first round: Cooper DeJean, Jalyx Hunt, Andrew Mukuba, Tyler Steen, Tanner McKee, and Moro Ojomo, among others. It is unlikely the Browns will end up trading Myles Garrett. If they do, though, it is a no-brainer move for the Eagles, regardless of the hefty price they would have to pay. Other Eagles Trade Speculation The Eagles already made a trade this week to reinforce their secondary. Trading with the New York Jets, they acquired cornerback Michael Carter in return for wide receiver John Metchie and a late-round pick swap. Carter has been a solid slot cornerback for the Jets across his five seasons in the NFL. This move gives the Eagles more versatility defensively, allowing them to move DeJean to the outside cornerback position if they choose to. NFL Insider Jordan Schultz also fueled speculation with his latest report on the Philadelphia Eagles. He reported they “are in on everything”. This certainly lines up with Roseman’s aggressive nature and suggests the Eagles could have an unexpected move up their sleeve. Regardless of what that looks like, the clock is ticking ahead of the NFL’s November 4th trade deadline.
