As the season rolls along, the New York Mets have hit a horrible skid. The Mets have somehow managed to be 3-13 in their last 16 games after going 16-3 in the previous 19 games. The first four hitters in the lineup have been good as well for New York, adding frustration to the situation. The main problem, however, is the end of the lineup, which cannot produce.
One player who just cannot be in the lineup anymore is Tyrone Taylor. Taylor has no power and is unable to hit. Without Jose Siri and with no other options, the Mets’ center field position is among the worst in baseball. The solution could lie in Luis Robert Jr. Unfortunately, Robert Jr. is batting just .185 with just eight home runs in 73 games this season. In other words, Robert Jr. has failed to be the bat the Chicago White Sox were hoping for.
However, the reality is that Robert Jr. would provide a lot more power and is overall much better than Taylor. Robert Jr. is a gold glove defender with the ability to steal as well. Taylor is a good defender, but doesn’t steal as much as Robert Jr. Taylor also has more strikeouts compared to walks and has half the RBI of Robert Jr. Just having Robert Jr. batting sixth or seventh in a lineup with tremendous power would be great for New York.
Sure, Robert Jr. hasn’t done that great this season. However, with the steals, defense, and the potential power that Robert Jr. has, it could add an element of danger to the lineup itself. Robert Jr. being in the Mets lineup would force other teams to pitch to him, thus showing that he could be better than Taylor. The fact is that the first five hitters are great, but once the other end begins, it feels like the Mets lineup is similar to the Washington Nationals with a bunch of nobodies or young players.
The Mets should be done with Taylor and realize that there is no offense coming from their center fielder. As a career hitter, Taylor is averaging seven home runs with a .238 average and five more strikeouts than walks. Robert Jr. has simply way better power and average than Taylor. The Mets know that Robert Jr. has the ability to be an absolute stud, so trading for him could be a great idea.
Sure, you can say the Mets’ pitching has done pretty badly lately. However, the fact is that many players will be returning from injury. The offense remains a bigger issue at the moment for New York. Especially the end of the lineup. The Mets need more production from their stars as well, but the end of the lineup absolutely feels dead. Taylor hasn’t helped the situation at all, and with his previous history, everyone knows that there isn’t going to be a sudden turnaround for Taylor.
The Mets should stop freaking out about their pitching injuries and instead realize that many players are returning from injury. The number one priority for the Mets should be to trade for Robert Jr. He may be struggling, but you can’t do much worse than Taylor. Just simply having a power threat at the plate could add an element of scariness to the lineup. One thing is for sure: The Mets lineup could be one the best in baseball with Robert Jr. especially a 2023 version of Robert Jr.
