After a losing season in 2023, the Cleveland Guardians bounced back in a big way by winning 92 games and making the American League Championship Series last season.
Now in his second season as Guardians manager, Stephen Vogt will have superstar third baseman Jose Ramirez and a talented, young rotation to try and lead them back for another deep playoff run this upcoming season.
Here are three Guardians to watch as spring training roars on.
Gavin Williams, pitcher
2024 MLB stats: 3-10, 4.86 ERA, 1.368 WHIP and 79 strikeouts over 78 innings pitched
After a solid showing as a rookie in 2023, Williams had an injury-riddled 2024 campaign that limited him to only 16 appearances. His performance was clearly affected.
Once ranked as a top pitching prospect in baseball, the 25-year-old will look to rebound in 2025.
One of the best strikeout pitchers in his time as a minor leaguer, Williams will have the chance to earn his spot in one of baseball's most underrated rotations.
If he can stay healthy, Williams could be one of baseball’s biggest breakout stars in 2025.
Triston McKenzie, pitcher
2024 MLB stats: 3-5, 5.11 ERA, 1.559 WHIP and 74 strikeouts in 75.2 innings pitched
After a stellar showing during the 2022 season, McKenzie looked like he was on the path to becoming one of baseball’s best young right-handers.
But after back-to-back nightmare campaigns, the 27-year-old could be pitching for his spot on the MLB roster in 2025. Injuries have limited him to only 91.2 innings pitched over the last two seasons, and McKenzie has failed to perform when available.
Posting a 5.11 ERA over that time, McKenzie has struggled with the long ball, giving up 19 home runs in 75.2 innings last season. With his job potentially on the line, McKenzie will be a player to watch as spring unfolds.
Kyle Manzardo, first base
2024 MLB stats: .234/.282/.421 with five home runs and 15 RBI in 53 games played
Acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays at the 2023 trade deadline, Manzardo got his first run with the big league club last season.
After a strong showing in the 2024 postseason, he will figure to be a major part of the Guardians after the departure of first baseman Josh Naylor.
The 24-year-old will look to show off the extra-base ability at the plate that once ranked him as baseball’s best first base prospect. Off to a hot start so far this spring, Manzardo is a name to watch for this upcoming season.
