The Detroit Tigers have added veteran depth to their bullpen ahead of a postseason push, acquiring right-handed reliever Kyle Finnegan from the Washington Nationals on Thursday, per ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Finnegan, 33, brings late-inning experience to Detroit, being Washington's primary closer since 2023. Despite a rocky 2025 season with Washington — marked by a 4.38 ERA — he's managed to collect 20 saves and post 32 strikeouts and 14 walks in 39 innings.
While Finnegan is unlikely to replace Will Vest as the closer — Vest leads Detroit with 16 saves and boasts a 2.53 ERA — the Tigers now have a veteran late-game option.

With Detroit nine games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central and tied with the Toronto Blue Jays for the best record in the AL at 64–46, the Tigers are on pace for a 94-win season. That would mark its highest win total since 2013, when they reached the AL Championship Series.
Finnegan’s arrival highlights Detroit’s commitment to strengthening a bullpen that ranks 20th in MLB with a 4.16 ERA. Despite his current numbers, Finnegan showcased elite form last season, earning an All-Star nod while converting 38 of 43 save opportunities with a 3.68 ERA.
In return, the Nationals received two right-handed pitching prospects: Josh Randall, Detroit's No. 15 prospect, and RJ Sales.
If Finnegan can rediscover his rhythm, Detroit’s bullpen will be stronger for a run in October.
