Tigers Announce Gleyber Torres News After Removal From Lineup

The Detroit Tigers are sitting in a comfortable lead in the AL Central, eight games ahead of the second-place Cleveland Guardians. Detroit did stumble out of the All-Star break, but they’ve picked it up again recently, winning six of their last eight games.

The Tigers finished the 2024 season strong, making an incredible run to reach the playoffs, and they added notable reinforcements in the offseason—most notably Gleyber Torres, who arrived on a one-year, $15 million contract.

The 28-year-old second baseman, who previously spent the last seven seasons of his career with the New York Yankees, has been an important part of Detroit’s lineup.

Tigers Remove Gleyber Torres From Lineup

Ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins, Torres was in the original lineup card, hitting second and playing second base.

Detroit then announced an update to the lineup, moving utility man Zach McKinstry to second base and placing Javier Baez in his spot at shortstop. The team wrote that Torres’ removal was due to left forearm tightness.

"Gleyber Torres has been scratched from tonight's starting lineup with left forearm tightness."

Torres’ Strong Season Makes Him Key to Detroit’s Playoff Push

The Tigers will hope that the tightness is a day-to-day issue and doesn’t affect Torres on a potential postseason run, because he has been so important to the everyday lineup. After the Yankees chose not to offer Torres a contract following his tenure in the Bronx, his deal with the Tigers was viewed as a “prove-it” opportunity given its one-year length and lack of long-term commitment.

Torres has exceeded expectations, making his third All-Star appearance in 2025—his first since 2019. His offensive numbers have been very solid in 101 games, as he is hitting .273 with a .796 OPS, 13 home runs, and 55 RBIs.

If Torres is to miss extended time, McKinstry and Baez would likely continue to play up the middle as Detroit looks to make back-to-back postseason trips.
