The Detroit Tigers have maintained their MLB best record headed toward the All-Star break in the face of a rash of injuries that have plagued the team in recent weeks.

The Tigers' pitching rotation took a big hit from young fireballer Jackson Jobe was knocked out for the season with a right flexor strain, causing manager AJ Hinch and his staff to scrounge for replacements.

On Wednesday, the Tigers announced an update on starting pitcher Alex Cobb that could portend a comeback soon for Detroit's offseason addition, and it sounds like good news for fans of the ballclub.

Detroit announced that Cobb, whom they signed from the Cleveland Guardians this offseason on a one-year, $15 million deal, was scheduled to throw a bullpen session today, signaling a positive step forward in his injury rehabilitation from left hip inflammation. Cobb has not pitched this season.

The 37-year-old Boston native pitched 16 innings for the Guardians last season and compiled a 2.76 ERA 10 strikeouts and 14 hits given up.

He pitched a combined 300 plus innings the previous two seasons with the San Francisco Giants, compiling ERAs of under 4.00 each season.

Cobb isn't likely to set the world on fire with the Tigers but he does have the skills to provide additional depth to a Tigers pitching staff that needs it now more than ever.

Cobb can earn one million dollar bonuses for pitching 140 or 150 innings.

While those numbers are unlikely given that Tarik Skubal leads Detroit with 109 innings pitched in the first half of the season, they show what the expectations were for the Tigers starter heading into the 2025 season and what Detroit expects from him when healthy.
