Tigers Announce Season-Ending Decision Before Guardians Matchup

The Detroit Tigers have officially ended Matt Vierling’s 2026 season, transferring the outfielder to the 60-day injured list while bringing back one of their most reliable bullpen arms.

Detroit activated left-hander Brant Hurter from the 60-day IL and optioned rookie left-hander Andrew Sears to Triple-A Toledo before Sunday’s series finale against the Cleveland Guardians.

The Tigers announced the moves through Tigers PR on X, with Vierling’s transfer creating the 40-man roster space needed for Hurter’s return.

Vierling had been sidelined since suffering a left adductor strain while running out a triple against the Baltimore Orioles on July 29. He finishes the season with a .207/.255/.335 slash line, five home runs and 31 RBIs across 92 games.

The timing comes as Detroit has fallen out of the postseason race. The Tigers entered Sunday at 65-77, 9.0 games behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central and 6.5 games behind the final Wild Card spot.

Hurter, meanwhile, gives manager A.J. Hinch another proven option for a bullpen that has missed him since late May. The 28-year-old posted a 2.84 ERA, 4-1 record, 1.07 WHIP and 18 strikeouts over 25.1 innings before his lumbar spine inflammation sidelined him.

Sears heads back to Toledo after making three appearances in his first major league stint. The 24-year-old went 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and eight strikeouts over 12.1 innings.

The move also comes with Cleveland fighting for much higher stakes. The Guardians entered Sunday at 72-71, only 2.5 games behind the AL Central lead and tied with Toronto for the final American League Wild Card spot.

For Detroit, the decision closes the book on Vierling’s season while restoring a key piece to the bullpen. For Cleveland, Sunday’s matchup represents another important game in a tightening postseason race.
