The Detroit Tigers have earned back-to-back postseason trips in 2024 and 2025 but have yet to advance past the divisional round. As the team navigates the offseason, the biggest storyline remains the future of Tarik Skubal. Both sides remain far apart on a contract extension, and as a result, Skubal has surfaced in trade rumors. Every contender would welcome his services and he would immediately slot in as the ace.

Skubal has continued to establish himself as the top pitcher in the American League after his sixth season in Detroit. After winning his first AL Cy Young Award in 2024, he remains the frontrunner to claim it again in 2025. The 28-year-old left-hander also proved his ability to rise in October, posting a 1.74 ERA and 36 strikeouts over his last three playoff appearances.

On Thursday, the Tigers announced that Skubal was named the recipient of the 2025 Tiger of the Year. The award is an annual honor given to the team’s most valuable player, as voted on by the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America since 1965.

This marks the second straight season he has earned the distinction as Detroit’s most impactful player. “Tarik Skubal is your 2025 Tiger of the Year, as voted on by the Detroit Chapter of the BBWAA! @TarikSkubal,” the team wrote on X.

The accompanying graphic highlighted two milestones from Skubal’s historic regular season. “Skubal made 12 starts this year in which he pitched at least six innings and allowed zero runs, a franchise record for the most such starts in a season. First pitcher in Tigers history to throw a complete game issuing zero walks and allowing no more than two hits with at least 13 strikeouts (05/22/25),” the post read.

The graphic also listed his season totals: a 13-6 record, 241 strikeouts and a 2.21 ERA across 31 starts. For the second consecutive year, Skubal led all qualified starters in the American League in ERA. Not included in the graphic was his 0.891 WHIP, which led all of MLB.

Skubal’s continued dominance has only intensified the spotlight on his future in Detroit as the offseason unfolds.
