The Detroit Tigers' bats came to life in Game 1 of their double header against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday as pitcher Tyler Holton and and three other pitchers combined to hold Oliver Marmol's team to two runs in an 11-2 Tigers victory.
The game helped the Tigers to stay at the top of the American League with the MLB leading Los Angeles Dodgers in their sights headed toward the All-Star break.
Detroit's 11-2 win at Nationals Stadium came amid a flurry of news updates for a team that has battled injuries all season, heading towards a much-needed rest.
Wednesday's series of moves included one on outfielder Justyn Henry-Malloy announced shortly after Detroit's win.
"OF Justyn-Henry Malloy has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo," the Tigers' PR account wrote on X Wednesday.
"RHP Dylan Smith was optioned to Triple-A follow this afternoon's game."
Malloy played his college ball with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and was the 187th overall pick of the Atlanta Braves in the 2021 MLB draft.
The 25-year-old right fielder hit .203 with the Tigers last season along with eight home runs and hasn't improved his average much since, hitting .215 in 93 at-bats this season, although his on-base percentage has improved significantly.
The Tigers' offense has shown signs of ratcheting things up to the next level with Riley Greene leading the charge on Wednesday.
Greene hit a three-run home run that set the tone for the Tigers in a six-run first inning that ultimately gave AJ Hinch's team the cushion it needed to take the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
He finished with two homers and six runs batted in on the day, picking up the slack for injured Tigers slugger Kerry Carpenter.
