Tigers' Troy Melton emerging as ace following dominant stretch

Troy Melton has emerged as an ace for the Detroit Tigers following his continued dominance in the rotation. In his last nine starts, he's held a 0.83 ERA with 55 strikeouts and a 0.85 WHIP across 54.1 innings pitched.

As well, the rising star has also pitched five or more innings with two or fewer runs allowed in each of his last nine starts. On the season, he's boasting a 7-1 record and a 1.46 ERA with 69 strikeouts across 80 innings pitched.

His 1.46 ERA is the lowest in MLB since making his season debut on May 24, when he had a 1.58 ERA across 74 innings. The 25-year-old is having a breakout campaign with the Tigers, who tossed another gem on Sunday in a 3-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants, while also winning the series.

Melton pitched six innings and allowed just one run, gave up four hits, one walk and struck out five. Since June 1, he's also held a 0.64 ERA, demonstrating his reliability.

Troy Melton is among the young core in Tigers' rotation excelling

His dominance has showcased how he's pitching like a true ace, which makes him a strong candidate to be a front-of-the-line ace for the future, especially with the loss of Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize.

But the Tigers own a 5-2 record since trading Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and remain one game back of a final AL wild-card spot. Since the departure of Skubal and Mize, the Tigers' young core in the rotation has provided them with success.

Melton, along with the return of Jackson Jobe, who dominated in his debut on Saturday, and Keider Montero, the Tigers' rotation has surprisingly performed well. Melton has been a reliable force that the Tigers were fortunate enough to hold onto, as the Arizona Diamondbacks were seeking Melton in a trade for Eugenio Suarez at last year's trade deadline.

Overall, they were wise not to trade him, as he's transformed into an ace who will likely anchor the rotation for the coming seasons for the Tigers. The Tigers also own a 10-3 record this season when Melton takes the mound, which continues to solidify his status as one of the top arms in the rotation.
