Tim Wallach will not return as Marlins bench coach

Veteran coach and long-time big leaguer Tim Wallach will step away from the Marlins at the end of the season, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

Tim Wallach will step away from his Marlins bench coach job after the year for family reasons. Simply, he doesn’t want to be separated by close to 3,000 miles from his grandkids. Good man, stellar playing and coaching career.

Wallach has served as the bench coach in Miami since the 2016 season.

Though the Marlins decided to retain skipper Don Mattingly, they’ll be on the look for a new second in command in the dugout. The split is entirely amicable, it seems. Per Heyman, Wallach would simply like to live nearer to his extended family.

It isn’t known whether Wallach will seek to continue his coaching career elsewhere. He could again be considered for managerial openings, as he has been in the past, or look to land a gig with a team that better suits his geographical preferences. A California native, Wallach had spent his prior coaching career with the Dodgers organization.
