New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil is making progress in his recovery from a high-grade right lat strain, but his return to the mound is still weeks away, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Monday.
That means his return to the Yankees’ rotation is not likely until July.
According to Boone, Gil is approximately 2–3 weeks from resuming mound work as part of his throwing program, which began in late April. This timeline suggests that Gil's earliest potential return to the Yankees' rotation would be in July.
Gil sustained the injury during a bullpen session on February 28, experiencing tightness in his pitching shoulder. Subsequent MRI results revealed a significant lat strain, leading to a shutdown from throwing for at least six weeks. Although he was initially expected to begin his throwing program in mid-April, a follow-up MRI indicated the need for additional healing time, delaying his progress by about 10 days.
The 26-year-old had a breakout season for the Yankees in 2024, earning American League Rookie of the Year honors. He posted a 15–7 record with a 3.50 ERA over 29 starts, striking out 171 batters in 151 2/3 innings. His absence has been felt in a rotation already impacted by injuries to key pitchers, including ace Gerrit Cole, who is out for the season following Tommy John surgery.
As Gil continues his rehabilitation, the Yankees are managing a rotation that includes Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Clarke Schmidt and Will Warren. With Marcus Stroman on the injured list with knee discomfort, the Yankees have relied on reliever Ryan Yarbrough the last two times through the rotation.
