After dealing with right ankle trouble over the last two seasons, Tommy Edman underwent surgery last month in effort to find a solution for the nagging injury.

Edman first sprained his right ankle while on rehab assignment with the St. Louis Cardinals last year. Then this past season, Edman landed on the injured list in early May due to right ankle inflammation.

He later had a second stint on the IL in August because of a sprained right ankle and didn’t return until September. The time off allowed Edman to sporadically play center field over the final few weeks of the season, but otherwise had been limited to the infield.

Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes offered further details of Edman’s surgery and said it was a debridement procedure, via Jack Harris of the L.A. Times:

Gomes said utilityman Tommy Edman’s recent ankle surgery was a debridement procedure to address the injury that nagged him during the second half of last season. Edman’s recovery will likely leave him limited at the start of spring training, but the team does not “expect it to affect a meaningful part of the season,” Gomes added.

Gomes previously said that the Dodgers expect Edman to have a full recovery by early Spring Training but won’t rush the process toward a return.

Edman was limited to just 97 games this year and primarily played second base as the Dodgers looked to manage the health of his troublesome right ankle.

Despite missing stretches of time, Edman tied a career high with 13 home runs and finished with 49 RBI, which were the third-most he’s had in a season.

During a recent appearance on ESPN LA, Edman shared that his procedure went well and expects to return to full health next year.

Prior to having right ankle surgery, Edman was able to enjoy some semblance of a normal offseason and receive recognition as a two-time World Series champion.

He participated in pregame festivities at SoFi Stadium prior to watching the Los Angeles Chargers host the Pittsburgh Steelers, and recently attended LEGOLAND California with his wife and son.
