Top 10 MLB prospects who could be called up in April

Although the new baseball season is underway and several teams look different than they did last season, there are still further makeovers yet to take place. Even more MLB rosters will be altered as some of the game's top prospects make their way to the big leagues.

Many such talents have already begun to see their stars rise, none more than the Braves’ Ronald Acuna. The 20-year-old phenom’s debut has only been delayed due to the technicalities of contractual control, and he is far from alone in that regard.

With Acuna’s graduation date from the minors drawing nearer and nearer, it is a good time to take look around at which rookies-to-be will join him early in the new year to begin to make good on the promise they have shown in the minors.

1.Ronald Acuna, Braves

After a spring training where he not only lived up to the hype, but somehow raised it even higher, Acuna’s MLB debut is imminent. In reality, he should have made the team outright and may likely already be the best Brave not named Freddie Freeman, but due to contractual issues, he became this year’s annual "least deserving demotee." However, April will not come to a close without Acuna adorning a Braves cap for the first time and beginning what could be a successful Rookie of the Year campaign.

2. Alex Reyes, Cardinals

Reyes’ debut in St. Louis has been a year overdue after Tommy John surgery pushed him back some 15 months from making a permanent impact in the Cardinals' rotation. However, in an encouraging spring training, he showed he's lost little in the way of stuff, with his fastball maintaining its upper-90s livelihood. It is still uncertain exactly how Mike Matheny will leverage his young hurler, but whether it be as a starter or bullpen weapon, Reyes’ impact is one of the most anticipated additions to a talented young pitching staff.

3. Nick Senzel, Reds

The polished bat of Senzel is MLB-ready right now, but he too is on a timing delay due to service time control. When the deadline passes for Cincy to secure another year of service from the talented young slugger, he will be up in short order. While it is uncertain how the club will balance his at-bats with those of incumbent third baseman Eugenio Suarez, getting Senzel in the mix will be a priority for the Reds' rebuild this year.

4. Willy Adames, Rays

Tampa Bay has undergone a plethora of changes since last summer, which has created multiple opportunities for younger players. The versatility of the club’s top prospect, Adames, should facilitate a place for him to secure a long-term stay with the club. While Adames could contribute at second base, he is a naturally skilled shortstop who projects as a long-term fixture at the keystone.

5. Willie Calhoun, Rangers

Calhoun was the centerpiece return from the Dodgers in exchange for Yu Darvish at last year’s trade deadline and quickly landed a September audition in left field. Although he did not break camp with the team this spring, it should not be long before he finds his way to Arlington once and for all. Calhoun has proved everything he can as a minor leaguer after reaching at least 28 homers, 88 RBI and 25 doubles in each of the past two years at Double- and Triple-A, respectively.

6. Michael Kopech, White Sox

On pure stuff alone, Kopech is beyond MLB-ready. His fastball can rival that of Noah Syndergaard's already, and he has the moxie to attack batters from the jump. However, he still was in need of some refining after an 11.57 spring ERA and walking as many as he struck out (seven and seven over seven innings). That dose of experience could prove invaluable when he makes his inevitable debut among the talented young White Sox rotation.

7. Gleyber Torres, Yankees

The acquisition of Brandon Drury, signing of Neil Walker and spring breakout of Miguel Andujar provided the Yankees with plenty of reasons to avoid bringing their top prospect to the majors out of camp. Still, they will provide little opposition on his road to the Bronx once he gets back to destroying minor league pitchers in his rebound year from Tommy John surgery. Although Torres is making his way to the majors as a shortstop, he will likely be slotted in at second or third base in order to play alongside Didi Gregorius, which should occur by mid-summer at the very latest.

8. Francisco Mejia, Indians

Honestly, it is surprising that the Indians didn't bring Mejia out of spring training with them. He is ahead of his age in maturity and ready to handle an MLB staff. The idea of giving him time at third base was also floated around in order to get his bat into the mix early, which further gives an indication of the club’s intent to get him to the majors soon. If either Roberto Perez or Yan Gomes slips at all, Mejia could be on the fast track to the big leagues early in the year.

9. Jack Flaherty, Cardinals

Technically speaking, Flaherty has already been promoted early, as he took Adam Wainwright's spot during the first trip through the St. Louis rotation. The 22-year-old was impressive, putting his top-shelf slider to good work while holding the Brewers to one run over five innings, striking out nine. Only the numbers game is keeping Flaherty at Triple-A and outside of the rotation currently, but one way or another, he will find himself back in the majors much sooner than later.

10. Steven Duggar, Giants

Duggar had the inside track on opening the season in center field for the Giants, but that plan was moved aside when Andrew McCutchen was brought aboard. However, the athletic outfielder remains the CF of the future in the Bay. He will likely get a chance to continue to hone his craft in a more optimal role besides fifth outfielder on the MLB roster early in the year but will ultimately be the first man looked to if McCutchen, Hunter Pence or Austin Jackson deal with injuries.
