When the Miami Marlins traded star second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the New York Yankees during last year's trade deadline, it served as the centerpiece of an all-out fire sale where they dealt Tanner Scott, Trevor Rogers, Bryan de la Cruz, A.J. Puk, and Josh Bell.
The most significant return from the Yankees in the Chisholm trade was middle-infielder Jared Serna and catcher Agustin Ramirez, New York's No. 19 and 20 prospects, respectively.
Ramirez soared up Miami's top prospect ranking, becoming the No. 4 prospect in the system after a 2024 minor league season in which he hit 25 home runs, drove in 93 runs and slashed .267/.358/.487 with an .845 OPS.
The Marlins on Monday made a huge announcement, calling up Ramirez for his major league debut vs the Cincinnati Reds, who are fresh off the heels of their 24-2 romp over the Orioles on Sunday.
The call-up of Ramirez was mostly due to a slew of injuries at the catcher position. Nick Fortes was placed on the injured list on April 10th with a Grade 1 (less severe) oblique strain, and was replaced by Rob Brantly. On Sunday's game against Philadelphia, however, Brantly sustained a shoulder injury and was sent to the injured list.
Ramirez's stint in the majors may come to an end when Fortes returns shortly after the 10-day minimum, but the opportunity offers the promising prospect an opportunity to show the Marlins organization who he is as a ballplayer.
Miami has control over Ramirez until 2031, so the young catcher has the potential to be a serious presence in the middle of the order for years to come.
