Top Landing Spots for Free Agent Max Scherzer
Tim Heitman-Imagn Images

After 17 seasons in MLB, free agent pitcher Max Scherzer — who will turn 41 in 2025 — is looking for what’s likely to be his last hurrah.

In an injury-ridden 2024 campaign, Scherzer managed just nine starts for the Texas Rangers — but while his time on the mound was limited, he proved he can still turn it on. The eight-time All-Star went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 43.1 innings this year, adding 40 strikeouts to his career total to rank in eleventh place on MLB’s all-time list at 3,407.

Scherzer earned $43 million during the 2024 season with the Rangers, but his projected salary for next year is much more budget-friendly. Sportrac puts his market value at one year and $15.2 million, which makes the three-time Cy Young Award winner far more affordable than most teams likely thought he’d ever be.

With Scherzer looking to lock down what could be the final chapter of his illustrious career, here are three teams who are likely to pursue a deal with the right-hander this offseason.

Detroit Tigers

Who among us doesn’t love a heartwarming reunion?

Scherzer made his name with the Tigers after being traded from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the end of 2009, helping Detroit win four consecutive AL Central titles (2011-14), while earning two All-Star nods (2013-14) and winning the 2013 AL Cy Young Award. During his five-year stint with the team, he accumulated a 3.52 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 1,081 strikeouts across 161 starts, leading MLB in wins during both the 2013 and 2014 seasons, and firmly establishing himself as an ace.

Now, the Tigers could desperately use Scherzer back in their rotation, even after recently signing veteran right-hander Alex Cobb.

In 2024 (particularly in the second half of the season), Detroit heavily relied on left-hander Tarik Skubal to lead an unorthodox strategy of utilizing relievers as starters and starters as bulk relievers, and it worked far better than it arguably should have. The Tigers’ rotation finished the season ranked fourth in MLB with a combined ERA of 3.69, and second in WHIP at 1.19. Still, manager A.J. Hinch has admitted himself that his island-of-misfit-toys approach to starting — which became known as “pitching chaos” during the playoffs — was difficult to manage.

“I have no idea whether you can do it for a full season,” Hinch told The Detroit Free Press’ Jeff Seidel in September. “We did it for a third of the season, and our guys continue to do that.”

Going into 2025, Skubal will return as the Tigers’ ace, with Cobb and Reese Olson behind him. While there are a number of potential options in the organization to fill the remaining two spots — including Casey Mize, Keider Montero, Jackson Jobe, and Matt Manning — adding Scherzer would solidify the rotation with a reliable veteran.

Philadelphia Phillies

On Dec. 4, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicted the Phillies’ rotation for 2025, listing Scherzer as the team’s fifth starter after Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sánchez, and Ranger Suárez.

Reuter wrote, “The Atlanta Braves bought low on an aging Chris Sale last offseason hoping he could hold down the No. 5 starter job, and he ended up winning NL Cy Young honors. The Phillies could take a similar approach with Max Scherzer, targeting him on a one-year deal and giving him a chance to pitch for a World Series contender in the twilight of his Hall of Fame career.”

In 2022, the Phillies exceeded all expectations by winning the NL Pennant, and now after three consecutive trips to the playoffs, the team is very much locked into a “win-now” mentality. With the goal of finally taking home the World Series title in 2025, the Phillies need to secure an upgrade in their fifth rotation slot — occupied by Taijuan Walker this year — before Opening Day.

In order to justify signing Scherzer, the Phillies will almost certainly want to recoup at least some of the $36 million left on Walker’s contract. Still, considering Walker’s career-worst 7.10 ERA and abysmal Pitching Run Value of -28 in 19 appearances this year, they may have to come to terms with simply cutting their losses.

At the end of the day, the Phillies want to win, and to do that, they need a rock-solid rotation from start to finish. Scherzer would be the big addition they’re looking for, and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski — who was the president and general manager of the Tigers during Scherzer’s time in Detroit — knows it.

Washington Nationals

Another reunion opportunity? The Nationals are paying Scherzer $15 million next year anyway, so they may as well add a bit more and put him in the rotation for a second stint.

Before the 2015 season, Scherzer joined the Nationals on a seven-year, $210 million deal to be paid out over 14 years. The $105 million deferral was the largest in MLB history at the time, and Scherzer won’t receive his final annual $15 million payout until 2028.

Despite the expensive pay checks, the Nationals certainly enjoyed having Scherzer in their rotation. He accumulated a stunning 2.89 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 1,610 strikeouts in 189 starts across seven seasons, and won consecutive NL Cy Young Awards in 2016 and 2017. Scherzer was also selected to the All-Star team five times during his tenure in Washington, pitched two no-hitters during the 2015 season, and played a crucial role in the Nationals’ franchise-first World Series victory in 2019.

Three years after he was shipped off to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the 2021 trade deadline, it’s easy to see why the Nationals would welcome Scherzer back to Washington — he’s exactly the sort of veteran presence the team needs to push their young core towards contention.

In 2025, the Nationals’ starting rotation will be led by MacKenzie Gore and Jake Irvin, but as of right now, the remaining three slots are up for grabs at spring training. On Dec. 4, Bleacher Report’s Reuter predicted Mitchell Parker and DJ Herz would take two spots, but Jackson Rutledge, Josiah Gray, Cade Cavalli, Joan Adon, and Cole Henry are all in the mix.

The Nationals posted identical 71-91 records in 2023 and 2024, but with each season, it’s clear they’re continuing to grind their way out of the rebuild. With starter Patrick Corbin’s poorly-aged six-year, $140 million deal finally almost off Washington’s books (they still owe him $10 million in deferred money in 2025), the team has some payroll flexibility to firm up the rotation with a reliable leader, and Scherzer would be exactly that.

George Springer's status for Game 6 is becoming more clear

George Springer’s status for Game 6 of the World Series is becoming more clear. Springer has missed the last two games of the World Series after hurting his side on a swing in his Toronto Blue Jays’ 18-inning loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3. The Blue Jays were able to win Game 4 on Tuesday and Game 5 on Wednesday despite the outfielder’s absence. On Thursday, Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that Springer is physically ready to play in Game 6. “He’s checked every box physically so far,” Schneider said of Springer. Getting Springer back would be a nice boost to the Blue Jays’ lineup, which has performed well even without him. Springer went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Game 3 before leaving the game. He’s batting .246 with an .884 OPS this postseason and has mashed 6 doubles and 4 home runs in 57 at-bats. Springer went 1-for-3 in Game 2 against Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who is the Dodgers’ scheduled starter for Game 6. Springer’s double was the Blue Jays’ only extra-base hit of the game, and he scored their only run that contest. His presence would be a big help for Toronto.

'TNF' takeaways: Lamar Jackson dazzles in return as Ravens humiliate Dolphins

The Baltimore Ravens dominated the Miami Dolphins in a 28-6 rout on "Thursday Night Football" as quarterback Lamar Jackson shined in his return from injury. Here are four takeaways from the first NFL game of Week 9: Lamar Jackson returns in style You would never know that Jackson had not played since Week 4 judging by his incredible performance on Thursday night. He wasted no time getting started with this fourth-down strike to tight end Mark Andrews in the opening quarter and capped his four-TD night with a nine-yard connection to wide receiver Rashod Bateman late in the third quarter. His 18 total TD passes against the Dolphins are the second-most all-time in five games vs. one opponent, only behind George Blanda's 21 against the New York Titans. After going 18-of-23 for 204 yards and four TDs, Jackson now has 14 passing TDs and only one interception in five games. If he stays healthy, this Ravens team will be difficult to slow down in the second half of the season. Mike McDaniel's seat keeps getting hotter It keeps getting worse for the Dolphins head coach after Thursday's latest dud. Miami had 332 yards of offense, but went 0-for-3 in the red zone and committed three turnovers, including a brutal one in their own territory in the first quarter. During a pregame segment on Prime Video, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport was asked what McDaniel's future looks like in Miami and said his job status is "firmly up in the air." While he said he did not "see anything imminent" from owner Stephen Ross, it will come down to how the players respond going forward. Although he signed an extension prior to last season and is under contract through 2028, a 2-7 record and another blowout loss is doing nothing to help McDaniel's case at the moment. Kyle Hamilton spearheads strong defensive performance from Ravens The Ravens entered the night allowing the third-most points per game (30 PPG), but Thursday night was a much different story. The All-Pro safety Hamilton may have not had the most tackles on the team, but his impact was certainly felt with six total tackles and one tackle for loss. He was more impressive than the stats show, especially at creating pressure on Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa and keeping Miami from having any success between the tackles. In the first quarter alone, Hamilton did not even line up as a safety in his first 15 snaps and still only gave up one yard rushing on four carries, opposed to 31 yards on three carries away from him, per Next Gen Stats. For a team that has struggled defensively, they need more of what they got on Thursday night if they are going to claw their way back into the AFC North conversation. Don't count the Ravens out yet It was not that long ago that Baltimore was 1-5 and staring at a wasted season. After back-to-back wins, an improving 3-5 record and a sloppy AFC North in which the Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3) are the only team above .500, the Ravens are firmly in the hunt. In fact, FanDuel currently lists them as the favorites (-145) to win the division as of Thursday night. The defense still needs to prove itself against stiffer competition, but if Jackson continues to ball out, the Ravens could complete a remarkable turnaround and mix up the AFC playoff picture.

Steelers, Jaylen Waddle Trade Window May Have Reopened

Steelers, Jaylen Waddle Trade Window May Have Reopened

The Pittsburgh Steelers want a wide receiver. They thought about the addition of Marques Valdes-Scantling, only to leave the door open for a bigger name. With days remaining before the trade deadline, there are a few, but one may have just reopened that could top their list. The Miami Dolphins have mutually parted ways with long-time general manager Chris Grier after 25 years of working in the position. The team sits at 2-7 and may be nearing the end of head coach Mike McDaniels as well, which could lead to significant changes being made everywhere, including the wide receiver position. Steelers Could Go After Jaylen Waddle The Steelers have reported interest in Jaylen Waddle. According to NFL insider Tony Pauline, the team has Waddle and Tennessee Titans' Calvin Ridley circled, with the Dolphins' firing becoming an interesting turn in the possible outcome at the deadline. "The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the market for another wide receiver and have been inquiring about players available at the position," Pauline wrote. "Two names I am hearing as trade targets are Jaylen Waddle of the Miami Dolphins and Calvin Ridley of the Tennessee Titans." Up until this point, the Dolphins have made it known that they were not open to a trade at the deadline. That likely changes with a change at general manager, and the move signals a bigger rebuild in the making. At 26 years old and a former first-round pick, he is likely their player with the highest price tag, but could also be their easiest to trade. Several teams are looking for a wideout, including the Steelers. What might give Pittsburgh the advantage is that they've been willing to make some splash moves this season. What Would Steelers-Dolphins Trade Look Like? Waddle already has three 1,000-yard seasons in the NFL, and is on pace to add another in 2025. With 586 yards and four touchdowns, he'd lead the Steelers in yards by 125 yards over DK Metcalf. He'd be second on the team in receiving touchdowns. The Steelers would need to give up a Day 2 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to open the conversation for Waddle. The Dolphins would be foolish not to push for a second or third round selection for a young wideout who's been producing. The Steelers shouldn't budge, though. Giving themselves a young wideout to finalize their room for the future is precisely what they need. Waddle is easily their best option, and therefore, they should hope the door has reopened and be willing to make another splash to land him.

How likely is it that Falcons, Kirk Cousins will part ways before trade deadline?

How likely is it that Falcons, Kirk Cousins will part ways before trade deadline?

Atlanta Falcons backup quarterback Kirk Cousins reportedly is still interested in finding a starting job with a different team before the NFL trade deadline arrives at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 4. That said, there was no indication throughout October that any team was close to pulling the trigger on a transaction to land his services. For an article published on Friday, Falcons reporter Josh Kendall of The Athletic revealed that it is "unlikely" Cousins will have a new NFL home by the time the first Tuesday of November comes to an end. Why Kirk Cousins, Falcons will likely stay married through trade deadline "Is there a team out there willing to give up a Day 2 draft pick for a 37-year-old quarterback with two-plus years and $115M of cap hits remaining on his contract? Probably not," Kendall wrote. As Kendall pointed out, Cousins was "mediocre" while starting in place of injured starter Michael Penix Jr. for Atlanta's Week 8 home game versus the lowly Miami Dolphins. In total, Cousins completed 21-of-31 passes for 173 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in a 34-10 blowout loss to what was previously a 1-6 Miami side. That same Dolphins team was booed off its home field during a 28-6 home loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night. Why Falcons may want to hold onto Kirk Cousins despite his bad outing "Even though Cousins told Falcons owner Arthur Blank during an offseason meeting that he wanted to be traded to a team with which he could start again," Kendall continued, "Atlanta kept him on the roster. And while Cousins has reportedly reiterated his desire to be moved in recent weeks, given what the Falcons would get in return — a late-round pick — it seems likely they’d rather stand pat and keep him as insurance for Penix." The 3-4 Falcons will enter the first weekend of November in the playoff hunt. Blank likely understands that quality QB2s don't simply grow on trees, so it makes sense that he'd want to keep a proven veteran who knows how to run Atlanta's offense on the roster. That said, one wonders if the outcome of this Sunday's game between the Falcons and 6-2 New England Patriots could result in Atlanta dropping its asking price for Cousins. As of Friday morning, ESPN BET had the Falcons as 5.5-point underdogs for the matchup at Gillette Stadium.
