Toronto Blue Jays Starter Has Wonderful Outing On May 23

Toronto Blue Jays Starting Pitcher Kevin Gausman had a dominant start on May 23 on the road against the Detroit Tigers. Gausman tossed six innings and surrendered one earned run while striking out a season-high 10 batters as the Blue Jays dominated the Detroit Tigers 9-1 on Thursday. The previous season-high in strikeouts for Gausman was eight on May 4 against the Washington Nationals.

Gausman entered Thursday’s game coming off a solid start the last time he took the mound. He surrendered three earned runs over six innings of work at home against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Gausman has been inconsistent thus far this season. He has three starts where he surrendered five or more earned runs and six starts where he surrendered one earned run or fewer. Gausman is 3-3 this season with an ERA of 4.47.

Gausman made his Major League Baseball debut in 2o13 with the Baltimore Orioles. He spent six years there before stints with the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, and Toronto Blue Jays. Gausman signed a five-year $110 million contract before the 2022 regular season with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Gausman is a two-time MLB All-Star(2021, 2023) and has finished top-10 in CY Young Award voting three times in his career. Gausman’s best career finish was when he finished third in the 2023 American League CY Young voting. He finished behind Gerrit Cole and Sonny Gray last season. Gausman also finished sixth in CY Young voting in 2021 and ninth in 2022.

Gausman has a career record of 91-94 with an ERA of 3.86.

Toronto Blue Jays Season Summary

It has been a miserable start to the 2024 season for the Blue Jays. They have a record of 23-26 and are in last place in the American League East. Toronto’s offense has been especially bad this season. They are 26th in runs scored, 23rd in home runs, and 19th in batting average.

The team’s pitching staff has struggled as well this season. They are 20th in ERA, have surrendered the third-most home runs, and are 23rd in opposing batting average.

Gausman’s next scheduled start is on Tuesday, May 28, on the road against the Chicago White Sox. The Toronto Blue Jays continue their four-game set this evening against the Detroit Tigers. Gausman will look to put forth a more consistent effort this season as the Toronto Blue Jays look to bounce back from what has been an awful season up until this point.
