The Toronto Blue Jays have been able to go on a hot streak and are currently holding the best record in the American League. They have decided to make a deal with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire reliever Seranthony Dominguez and the two teams are in the middle of a doubleheader against one another. Let’s take a deeper dive into the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles trade to see what this means going forward.
The Toronto Blue Jays bolster their bullpen by trading for reliever Seranthony Dominguez and cash from the Baltimore Orioles. In exchange, they are sending prospect Juaron Watts-Brown, per Shi Davidi and Ben Nicholson-Smith. Toronto has had a mediocre bullpen as they are 17th in Major League Baseball with a 3.94 reliever ERA this season and now add Dominguez as a late-inning reliever to help bolster its depth.
Seranthony Dominguez has pitched relatively well this season as the 30-year-old bullpen arm has appeared in 43 games and is 2-3 with a 3.24 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP in 41.2 innings, while also tallying a pair of saves. He keeps the ball in the park and is familiar to pitching at the Rogers Centre in his career as well. Dominguez is a pure rental and has an above average 30.9% strikeout rate as he dots his fastball well, but has struggled a bit with walks this season. For the Toronto Blue Jays, this adds another veteran arm to rely on in the final two months of the regular season and into the postseason.
For the Baltimore Orioles, this helps their farm system as Watts-Bronw was the 10th-best prospect in their organization. The 23-year0old has pitched in Double-A this season and has a four-pitch mix with an excellent slider.
