With three days before the sun sets on another MLB trade deadline, the competition for Arizona Diamondbacks star Eugenio Suárez has been fierce. However, another star third baseman is re-entering the mix.
According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, interest has renewed on Cardinals gold glover Nolan Arenado, who "could be moved" by Thursday's 6 p.m. ET deadline.
After the Yankees traded for the Rockies' Ryan McMahon, a number of contenders are still vying for a third baseman. Feinsand listed the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies in particular. The Cardinals, however, would need to get approval from Arenado, who has a full no-trade clause and blocked a trade to the Astros this past offseason.
"Despite their need for a third baseman following Isaac Paredes’ recent injury, sources have indicated that the Astros don’t appear inclined to make another bid for Arenado." Feinsand wrote. "The Yankees have already filled their hot corner vacancy, removing another potential suitor, but a source said some of the other clubs pursuing Suárez could pivot to Arenado if they miss out on the Arizona slugger."
A career .282 hitter, Arenado is having a down year at the plate this season. He's slashing .235/.295/.368 with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs. In 10 games since the All-Star break, he's hitting .139 with just five hits in 36 at bats. However, the 34-year old is an elite defender that would be an upgrade at the hot corner for any team looking to make a postseason run. He's made three errors all season and in the midst of a 66-game errorless streak that dates back to April 25.
Beyond this season, Arenado has two years and $42 Million remaining his current deal, suggesting St. Louis may need to pay down part of his contract to move him.
"Whether stellar defense and slightly below average offense (88 OPS+) are enough for a club to commit to two-plus years of Arenado remains to be seen, but it’s certainly in play."
