Trading Brendan Donovan Would Be a Huge Mistake for the Cardinals

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, Brendan Donovan’s name has been increasingly linked to contenders in need of a versatile, high-contact bat. While the allure of a prospect haul can be tempting for any organization, the St. Louis Cardinals must resist the urge to deal their homegrown utility man. Trading Brendan Donovan would be a shortsighted decision that cripples the team’s present and jeopardizes its future.

Donovan Is the Glue Holding it all Together

Donovan, currently enjoying a stellar 2025 campaign, has become the quintessential “glue guy” for the Cardinals. His .293/.360/.428 slash line with 9 home runs and a 123 OPS+ speaks volumes about his offensive impact. He doesn’t just get on base, he grinds out at-bats, rarely strikes out (his strikeout rate ranks in the 90th percentile), and consistently puts the ball in play. This disciplined approach is a stark contrast to the feast-or-famine swings prevalent in today’s game and provides a crucial stabilizing force at the top of the Cardinals’ lineup. In an era where power is often prioritized over of contact, Donovan offers a refreshing and highly effective offensive profile.

Beyond the bat, Donovan’s defensive versatility is truly elite. He’s proven capable of playing virtually every position on the diamond at a high level. The utility man has logged significant innings at first, second, third, shortstop, and both corner outfield spots since his 2022 debut. Furthermore, his ability to play all over the field allows manager Oliver Marmol flexibility in crafting his daily lineup. A Gold Glove winner in 2022 for his utility prowess, Donovan’s defensive reliability eliminates concerns no matter where he’s deployed. Losing such a multi-faceted defender would create significant holes across the roster, and would hurt the team’s overall defense.

Additionally, Donovan is under team control through 2027. This makes him a valuable, cost-controlled asset for several seasons to come. His current salary of $2.85 million for 2025 is an absolute steal for a player of his caliber. While an extension may be on the horizon, his current contractual situation offers tremendous value that would be nearly impossible to replace through a trade. This isn’t a rental player. This is a foundational piece around which the Cardinals can continue to build.

Donovan’s Leadership and Clubhouse Presence are Important

Perhaps even more intangible, but no less important, is Donovan’s leadership and clubhouse presence. He’s widely regarded as one of the hardest workers on the team and a respected voice. Additionally, his quiet, lead-by-example approach fosters a positive team culture and helps set a high standard. In a clubhouse that has seen its share of ups and downs in recent years, Donovan provides a steadying influence that can’t be quantified in statistics alone.

The Cardinals are at a pivotal juncture. While the temptation to acquire prospects for future success is understandable, trading Donovan would be a move born of desperation. He embodies the very qualities a winning baseball team needs. Consistent offensive production, elite defensive flexibility, cost-controlled talent, and strong leadership. Furthermore, parting ways with such a valuable player would be to sacrifice proven present value for uncertain future returns. A gamble the St. Louis Cardinals simply can’t afford to take. Donovan is an untouchable asset, and the Cardinals’ best course of action is to build around him, not trade him away.
