Trevor Story is in his tenth major-league season as the Boston Red Sox’s starting shortstop. He spent six seasons with the Colorado Rockies before signing a six-year, $140 million contract with Boston in 2022 that includes a player opt-out after 2025.
During his time in Colorado, Story earned two All-Star selections and two Silver Slugger Awards. Since arriving in Boston he’s battled injuries every year—he hasn’t appeared in more than 94 games in a single season for the Red Sox.
In 2025, however, Story has been healthy, appearing in 82 games this year and batting .237 with 12 home runs and a .660 OPS.
On Monday, Story and the Red Sox erupted for seven runs in the first inning of a 13–6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Despite the offensive outburst, Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet struggled, allowing five runs on seven hits over six innings in one of his shakier starts this season.
After the game, Story highlighted the long-overdue run support for Crochet, “We definitely owed him this one. He has been nails for us all year. Literally all year. We haven’t given him much support, but it was nice tonight to go out there in the first and string together at-bats like that against a tough guy on their side,” per MassLive's Chris Cotillo.
Boston acquired Crochet from the Chicago White Sox in an offseason trade and locked him into a six-year, $170 million extension beginning in 2026 that includes an opt-out after 2030. In his first season in Boston, Crochet has been excellent: he’s 8–4 with a 2.26 ERA and has struck out 144 batters in 115.1 innings.
Boston sits at 42–44, three games back of a wild-card spot and hasn’t made the playoffs since 2021, making each win down the stretch critical to ending their drought.
