Sometimes teams win, sometimes teams lose, and sometimes games are rained out.

In this case, it was the latter as the Toronto Blue Jays game against the Baltimore Orioles was rained out, the first case of a game being postponed this season. Of course, one of Toronto’s games against the Kansas City Royals was called after five innings as well.

The game will be made up in a traditional doubleheader on July 29, where the Blue Jays roster could look much different, for better or for worse, as the trade deadline is just a few days after this game.

As it stands, the getaway day on Wednesday will still be played at 12:35 PM ET, with Chris Bassitt likely taking the mound against Kyle Bradish. The Blue Jays will have a chance to win their first series since April 19-21’s series against the San Diego Padres, and could tie their second series in their past three attempts.

In reality, this was probably a good thing for the Blue Jays, as both Justin Turner and George Springer were out of the lineup and likely couldn’t pinch hit, similar to Monday’s game. With an extra day’s rest it’s possible both could be ready for Wednesday’s game, but hopefully Springer doesn’t return to the leadoff spot!

It’s been a hot minute since the Blue Jays played a doubleheader. The last time a Blue Jays game was postponed was on July 5, 2023, with the doubleheader coming the following day. Interestingly, the Blue Jays won both those games and had a four-game win streak, ending the month 14-10 for a .583 win percentage.

Hopefully by the time this doubleheader rolls around, the Blue Jays will have some clarity on whether or not they’ll make the playoffs. As it stands, their 19-22 record is the worst in the American League East division, and are 7.5 games behind the leader, the Baltimore Orioles. They are five games back of the Wild Card spot as well, and while there’s plenty of season left, the team hasn’t done much to inspire hope.
