Twins All-Star SS Carlos Correa lands on COVID-19 IL

The Minnesota Twins confirmed on Monday that All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa tested positive for COVID-19 during the club's 7-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), the Twins officially placed Correa on the COVID-19 injured list ahead of Tuesday's doubleheader at Detroit.

The 27-year-old who joined the Twins in March on a three-year, $105.3 million contract missed 11 games earlier this month due to a bruised right middle finger that he suffered while playing against the Baltimore Orioles. Correa lands on the IL batting .279 with three home runs and 16 RBI this season.

In a corresponding roster move, Minnesota selected the contract of infielder Jermaine Palacios from Triple-A St. Paul before Tuesday's games.

Per Do-Hyoung Park of the Twins' website, Correa is vaccinated against COVID-19. Minnesota starting pitcher Joe Ryan and outfielder Gilberto Celestino were already on the COVID-19 IL before Tuesday's development.

"It’s something that every team in the league is dealing with," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said about the situation on Monday. "It does not feel good when it’s your team that’s going through it. It doesn’t feel like we’ve been able to shake it for a little while."

The Twins began Tuesday sitting atop the American League Central standings at 29-20.
