Twins' Kyle Farmer somehow avoids serious injury after being hit by fastball

It was a scary moment for Minnesota Twins shortstop Kyle Farmer on Wednesday, one that is likely going to leave a mark.

Literally.

In the fourth inning of a scoreless contest between the Twins and the visiting Chicago White Sox, Farmer took a 92-mile-per-hour fastball way up and in from White Sox starter Lucas Giolito.

It was a bad scene. Bad enough that Giolito was clearly distressed as soon as it happened. Farmer had to spend a significant amount of time on the ground around home plate before making it back up and over to the dugout.

Luckily, Farmer avoided a broken jaw. Catcher Ryan Jeffers said that fact alone was a miracle.

“Nobody wants to see that happen in a baseball game,” Jeffers said, according to the team website. “Everybody’s praying for him and praying for a speedy recovery. It’s hard, and I’m glad we went out there and played with the poise that we did after that happened.”

Minnesota ended up winning the game by a 3-1 final score.

Farmer did have to have undergo surgery to realign four of his teeth, as well as fix a laceration on his lower lip, but this could easily have been a far, far more concerning scenario.

Thankfully, that surgery went well.
