The Minnesota Twins designated catcher Alex Jackson for assignment Saturday, making a notable roster change before the second game of their series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The move was announced by the Twins ahead of the matchup and removes Jackson from the club's catching depth. Minnesota will now rely more heavily on Ryan Jeffers behind the plate as it looks to respond after Philadelphia's 7-1 victory in the series opener.
Jackson's departure comes after an underwhelming stretch at the plate, while Minnesota continues adjusting its roster during the final weeks of the season.
The Twins also have several notable players contributing to their current roster picture. Luke Keaschall is batting .266 with 17 doubles, seven home runs and 36 RBIs, while Byron Buxton recently returned from the 10-day injured list.

Buxton went 1-for-4 in Thursday's series opener after returning to center field. His availability gives Minnesota another important offensive and defensive piece as the club tries to stabilize its lineup.
Connor Prielipp is scheduled to start for the Twins in the second game. The left-hander enters with a 3-5 record and 4.79 ERA across 16 starts and will be tasked with slowing a Phillies lineup that scored seven runs Thursday.
Philadelphia enters Saturday at 65-58 and sits second in the National League East. Minnesota is 60-63 and third in the AL Central, leaving the Twins with little room for mistakes as they try to stay within reach of the postseason picture.
The roster decision also places greater responsibility on Jeffers. With Jackson no longer available as a backup option, Minnesota will need its remaining catching depth to handle the workload while the club evaluates its roster for the stretch run.
After Philadelphia controlled the opener, the Twins will hope Prielipp can help change the series momentum. The pitching matchup and a healthier Buxton could give Minnesota an opportunity to respond quickly.
