The Minnesota Twins have more clarity on Byron Buxton’s recovery after the All-Star outfielder underwent right hip surgery Friday.
Buxton had a successful right hip arthroscopy that included a labral repair, decompression and cam resection, according to Betsy Helfand of the Pioneer Press.
The procedure officially ends Buxton’s 2026 season as he begins the recovery process. The Twins had placed him on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 30 after he dealt with continued right hip problems.

Buxton had already spent time on the injured list multiple times this season because of his hip. The latest setback ultimately kept him out for the remainder of the regular season.
The surgery gives the Twins a clear path forward as Buxton begins working toward a return for the 2027 season.
Buxton appeared in 93 games this season and finished with a .254 batting average. He collected 18 doubles, one triple and 25 home runs while driving in 46 runs.
He also scored 65 runs and stole seven bases while posting a .319 on-base percentage and .511 slugging percentage. His .830 OPS reflected the impact he had when available.
Buxton’s season was split between a productive first half and a difficult stretch after the All-Star break. He hit .271 with 25 home runs in his first 75 games before batting .172 without a home run over his final 18 appearances.
The Twins will now turn to their other outfield options while Buxton focuses on his recovery. Walker Jenkins has taken on additional opportunities in center field as Minnesota evaluates its young players.
Minnesota entered Friday at 72-82 with eight games remaining. The Twins are still within the American League Wild Card picture but face a six-game deficit for the final spot.
For now, the attention around Buxton will remain on his recovery following surgery. The Twins will have several months to monitor his progress before Spring Training begins.
