One of the best left-handed relievers is off the market.

Numerous sources reported Tuesday morning that Danny Coulombe signed a one-year, $3 million deal (including performance bonuses) with the Minnesota Twins.

Coulombe has been in the league for a while now, with the Los Angeles Dodgers selecting him in the 25th round of the 2012 draft. He made his Major League Baseball debut with them in 2014, pitching just over four innings.

He eventually found his way to the Oakland Athletics, breaking out in 2017 when he had a 3.48 ERA and a 4.16 FIP in 51.2 innings pitched. Over the next five seasons, he didn’t pitch all that much, registering 73 innings from 2018 until 2022 where he had a 3.45 ERA and a 4.23 FIP.

Coulombe was traded to the Baltimore Orioles before the start of the 2023 season. That year, he had a 2.81 ERA and a 2.83 FIP in 51.1 innings pitched, helping the Orioles reach the postseason for the first time since 2016.

The 2024 season was Coulombe’s best in terms of ERA. In 29.2 innings pitched or 33 outings, the 35-year-old had a 2.12 ERA and a 2.83 FIP with a 29.9 K% and a 4.7 BB%. He missed a portion of his season after getting surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow in the summer.

It’s well known that the Blue Jays don’t have a lot of great left-handed reliever options on their 40-man roster. Right now, Brendon Little is the only one who projects to be in their bullpen on opening day according to Fangraph’s roster resources. They also signed Josh Walker earlier this off-season while Easton Lucas was claimed off waivers toward the end of last season.

The Blue Jays realistically still need a high-leverage lefty but there aren’t a whole lot of options remaining after Coulombe signed. There are a few interesting lefties remaining, Jalen Beeks is probably the best, while Andrew Chafin and Ryan Yarbrough remain unsigned.
