Minnesota Twins utility man/catcher Willians Astudillo, aka La Tortuga (the turtle) put on an impressive display of base running during Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees at Target Field.
Showcasing a self-awareness about how his body type does not conform to the prototypical, fleet-footed base runner, Astudillo cracked a great joke after the game about just that notion.
After getting on base with an RBI single, Astudillo chugged around the bases to score on Max Kepler’s double. As noted by the Star Tribune’s Michael Rand, Astudillo is “generously listed at 5-9, 225 pounds.” With that in mind, Astudillo’s run scored was a sight to see.
Not surprisingly, the Internet loved Astudillo’s maximum effort and the visuals it provided.

Wednesday night, in one brilliant sprint from first base to home, a new #MNTwins legend was born. Cue the overdramatic photo treatment.@DanHayesMLB on Willians Astudillo, Jake Odorizzi's no-hit bid and a good night of baseball at Target Field: https://t.co/dpk4Rt42As pic.twitter.com/oYCxjWwetF

Best of all, though, is how Astudillo characterized the meaning behind his spectacular circling of the bases.
“I just wanted to show that chubby people also run,” Astudillo said after the game through an interpreter.
Gold.
