Two-time MVP Miguel Cabrera on impending 3,000th hit: 'I think I'm going to cry'

When the Detroit Tigers take on the New York Yankees in the finale of a three-game set on Thursday afternoon, 11-time All-Star Miguel Cabrera will be looking to make history. The recently turned 39-year-old Cabrera is currently at 2,999 career hits, just one shy of joining the exclusive 3,000-hit club.

As he is now on the doorstep of the prestigious milestone, "Miggy" has been taking it all in.

Whenever Cabrera notches the history-maker, he'll become just the 33rd player in MLB history to get to 3,000 hits, and he'll join Albert Pujols as the only active players in the club. There are only three other active players with even 2,000 career knocks: Robinson Cano (2,629), Yadier Molina (2,115) and Joey Votto (2,033).

Cabrera spent the first five years of his future Hall of Fame career with the Florida Marlins from 2003 to 2007, helping them win their second World Series title when he was just a rookie. Cabrera earned the first of his 11 All-Star nods in 2004, all of which came between that year and 2016 and included a stretch of seven straight honors beginning in 2010.

The Venezuelan has the reputation of being one of, if not the best righthanded hitter of the millennium, as evidence by his seven Silver Slugger Awards, four batting titles and back-to-back AL MVP Awards in 2012 and 2013. Cabrera also captured the rare Triple Crown in 2012 by leading the AL with a career-high in home runs (44) and RBI (139), as well as batting average (.330).

When Cabrera won the Triple Crown, he became the first hitter to accomplish the feat since 1967, when Boston Red Sox legend and Baseball Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski did it.
