Update emerges on Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton after scary collision

The Minnesota Twins are providing an update on shortstop Carlos Correa and outfielder Byron Buxton after their frightening collision during Thursday’s game.

In the third inning of their game against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Md., Correa and Buxton were trying to field a short pop-up off the bat of Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins. The ball drifted into center field as Correa backpedaled after it and Buxton came charging in behind him.

At the last moment, Correa tried to duck out of the way and let Buxton make the catch. Buxton did successfully make the grab, but his momentum carried him sideways into Correa, and the two players’ heads collided.

It looked like the three-time All-Star Correa got the worst of that collision as his head snapped forward violently. Here is a closer angle of the collision (after which Correa had to exit but Buxton was briefly able to stay in the game before exiting himself following the top of the fourth).

Following the game, which the Twins went on to win 4-0, the team shared an update on the respective statuses of Correa and Buxton. They said that both players have formally been placed in the concussion protocol, per Dan Hayes of The Athletic.

Correa, 30, and Buxton, 31, are both relatively injury-prone. The former missed nearly half of last season due to a foot issue, and the latter has only appeared in 100 or more games in two of his 11 career MLB seasons.

Minnesota is having a decent season at 24-20, which is fourth in the AL Central but has them currently occupying the third and final Wild Card spot in the American League. But now they have a big concern with Correa and Buxton, who produced the scariest outfield collision since this one by the Boston Red Sox last year.
