Update: Luis Urias “Getting Closer” to Returning

Brewers general manager David Stearns visited the broadcast booth for Milwaukee’s home opener and provided plenty of talking points for Brewers fans. One of the biggest topics discussed was the status of Brewers infielder Luis Urias.

Urias has been injured since the end of Spring Training after he hurt his quadricep running the bases . He was placed on the injured list and has progressed a lot slower than the Brewers initially expected. Brewers manager Craig Counsell originally predicted that Urias could possibly be available for the Baltimore series. However, some setbacks during his rehab scratched that possibility quickly.

While talking with Brewers broadcasters Brian Anderson and Bill Schroeder, David Stearns revealed that Urias is “getting closer” to where he needs to be in order to return to the lineup. He said Urias has been making progress running the bases and getting his swing back to full speed, but he’s not ready just yet.

David Stearns said he’s not too worried about the rate Urias is recovering from this quad injury. Stearns went on to acknowledge that these type of injuries can linger all season if players aren’t given enough time to fully recover, so he wants Urias to get to 100% before he brings him back.

On Luis Urías, Stearns said: "We're still within the realm of the original notion of what this injury could be (re timetable)."

Unlikely to get to an affiliate this weekend, Stearns said, but possible he takes "controlled ABs" in Arizona. He is doing baseball activities, though.

Urias Can Boost the Brewers Lineup

In their first five games, the Milwaukee Brewers lacked in almost every aspect imaginable. In addition to a disappointing performance from their three stud starting pitchers, the offense failed to give consistent run support. Averaging less than three runs per game in the first five games of the season, the Brewers need to get their bats into gear.

Urias doesn’t bring a ton of power to the plate. However, he does bring some offensive consistency towards the bottom of the lineup. That consistency is clearly missing when Jace Peterson fills in at third base.

Last season, Urias set career highs with a .249 batting average, .345 on base percentage, and .445 slugging percentage. In addition, Luis blasted 23 homers and knocked in 75 RBIs. It’s fair to assume that once Urias returns, this Brewers lineup might get a boost of offense to help carry their pitching staff while they work off some of rust from the extended offseason.

Brewers fans are excited to see Urias return to the Brewers lineup. Sources say Urias may be joining a Brewers affiliate this weekend. If all goes well in his rehab assignment, we could see him in the Brewers lineup very soon.
